How to download mods for Steam version?

Post » Thu May 10, 2012 6:11 pm

I've always had a gripe about Steam: I can never manage to mod. I've tried to mod Oblivion and F:NV on it but I just can't find a tutorial for it. I went to the Skyrim midnight release but they didn't have any retail pc copies left due to pre-orders(I waited in a lineup for 3 hours for nothing >:() so I just decided to buy the Steam version anyway even though I wasnt sure I could mod it. Now that mods are flooding into Skyrim nexus, I'm wondering if there really is a way to mod a digital copy of Skyrim. I hear you need to find some folder for skyrim on your computer but I'm not sure where to find it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated because if I could mod Skyrim I would be able to mod my other Bethesda games on steam. Sorry if this belongs to the tech form, if so, please move it mods.

EDIT: I found my steam folder, but the only things in it are the icons for my steam games. Nothing else.

Digital and DVD installs go to the exact same place, and are modded the exact same way. You install mods to your "Steam/Steamapps/Common/Skyrim/Data" folder.

I can't find that folder though. I did a search on My Computer for it but all i found was a steam folder with only desktop icons for my games on steam.

look on TESnexus.com, I'm sure there will be a tutorial. There are already some in the wiki section for Oblivion/ New Vegas

If you did a default steam install, it will be "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\skyrim"

If you installed Steam to the default location it would be in Program Files. (Or if you are on a 64 bit system it's 'Program Files (x86)') You should then be able to follow the directory from there.

It's on your C drive - Program Files if you installed it to the default place I believe. I change mine so im not 100 percent sure.

Don't use the search feature, I usually find it's pretty rubbish. If you installed Steam in it's default location, than it should be somewhere in C/Program Files / Steam / Steamapps / Common / Skyrim. Just go in the long way.

%Your PC%/steam/steamapps/common/skyrim/data/

Mods go there, for the most part. Remember to to read the readme of the mod!

Thank you guys, I found the Skyrim data folder. I'm gonna test mods with the no blocky textures mod and then reply back if it works or not.
