How to enable Parallax In Skyrim?

Post » Tue Jun 19, 2012 5:24 am

Does anyone know how to enable parallax for skyrim's meshes/textures? It has really bugged the hell out of me because the game could look so much better with parallax mapping, even small parallax maps make a huge difference.

There was http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=1 by Osmodius but he hid the file.

edit: Obviously because you made it and I didn't even check your name, I'm not well.

But I do remember a thread where people were discussing parallax mapping a little after the CK came out. It might still be open.

No, I changed the name of the file to correspond with my steam workshop version xD http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=5628

And the glaciers already have parallax enabled, I need to know how to enable it on the objects that dont have it enabled.

Look at both the textures and models of the Glaciers?

(also.. It's pretty much impossible to get decent looking Glaciers.. Maybe if there were subsurface scattering or something. There would need to be refractions and all sorts of crap..

I think the answer is in the models, but Im not sure what to look for or what to use for checking the models for this.

It might be a shaderflag in the BSShaderProperties, or alternatively it might be part of the nitrishape or niextra data....its hard to say. You'll have to check everything. Check it against another model of a similar type. like glaciers vs rocks or something?

Parallax is enabled in the ShaderTypeMaterial -> and Skyrim supports 3 different Parallax Materials -> Normal Parallax -> Parallax Occlusion and Multi-Layer Parallax.

I decoded all of the available Materials and the latest nif.xml includes these.

Oooooo... more and fancier types of parallax. :twirl:

Where can one find the latest nif.xml?

So I am guessing that info won't help Osmodius at all however, given that he is probably after landscape textures and not model textures and I am guessing the landscape isn't set up to use a parallax map and there is obviously no way to enable it like you might be able to with a nif?

Why would you think he's asking about landscape textures? He's clearly indicated his interest in .nifs, and landscape has no .nif to play with.

Skyrim has Parallax Occlusion? That can produce great results... http://img11.abload.de/img/1n93h.jpg
That picture actually has just flat textures, but it looks like real stones.

I wonder what kind of textures use parallax occlusion mapping in Skyrim, because well, pretty much all textures look flat and ugly.

I'm counting a grand total of 10 *_p.dds textures in my extracted textures folder.

Only ten parallax'd meshes.

Most of the Parallax textures are _e and _em pairs, a few are _p there are a couple _h maps as well.

All are applied to the Environment/Height texture slot and the Masks are applied to the EnvironmentMask/HeightMask Slot

Just FYI the Environment/Height slot is Slot 5, the Mask is Slot 6, and the Layer Slot is 7.
