I was under the impression that when you escape from Helgen, you appear at the point where the 20 minute video demo starts.
I'd say it'd probably take at least 15 minutes or so from there to get to Whiterun, which I think is the nearest city.

If Helgen is where we start at than it's pretty close to Falkreath ( directly to the West) and the village of Riverwood to the North. Whiterun is a little further to the North

Even if it's not far from a town or city I'll still wander around outside and see if I can find any dungeons and such before going in and making myself known

I hope we start as close to a city as possible. I don't get peoples fascination with the wilderness. The first thing I did in Oblivion was to head strait into the Imperial City and start robbing houses/shops in the night. I assume my start in Skyrim will be no different.

Apparently you start where the demo/E3 footage starts, in which case you have Whiterun to the North and Falkreath to the South as the closest cities, while the closest settlement is Riverwood. It's a fair walk to both cities and either way you'll have to go through some beautiful snow, forest, or tundra to reach the closest city. It shall be a wonderful journey.

This! I will be living as a thief, no doubt about it. I'm especially happy that they adopted the FO3 lockpicking system as opposed to the Oblivion system. Much more realistic IMO...

I think one of the preview people specifically said Whiterun isn't particularly far from where you start.
