how do i get rid of 'strings'-errors?

Post » Sun Nov 18, 2012 2:56 pm

i suddenly keep getting long lists of 'strings'-errors when loading one certain mod (that didn't do this before, and i have no idea why it does now)
the errors read like
MASTERFILE: LOCALIZATION: Lookup failed for ID: 0x00011C71 from strings file: STRINGS/Skyrim_ENGLISH.DLSTRINGS
MASTERFILE: LOCALIZATION: Lookup failed for ID: 0x000126C3 from persistent strings file: STRINGS/Skyrim_ENGLISH.STRINGS

i've read somewhere, you could get rid of this by adding a "sLanguage=..."-line to your editor-ini, but that didn't change nothing
(not even after adding the line and then resaving/-loading the mod)

i'm running an english game version on an english windows copy
(only thing unusual perhaps is i originally bought a german copy for availability reasons (whatever happened to international versions, btw?), but that was never even installed (dl'd english version from steam right away, and i'd find it rather hard to imagine steam'd trace my original version by serial and punish me with errors for changing language :-)

ah yes and i never used tessnip or anything on this mod (just adding this because i got these same errors with another mod after doing so)

help, please...?

Have you tried adding this sLanguage thing to each of the ini files (there's 3 or 4, I believe). I had a similar thing getting logging-debug to work, because I put the lines in the wrong ini file (in the end, I shoved the relevant switches into each of the inis and one of them worked ;))

Other than that ... unless a GameUpdate removed Language Files (possible, I guess?) then I've no idea ... but you would imagine a lot more people would be complaining if this was the case?

i actually thought i had added it to any single ini there is, but what you wrote made me do a windows-search for "skyrim*.ini", which brought up another skyrimprefs.ini i had no idea about (which is not in the ...steam\skyrim folder, but in the skyrim\skyrim subfolder) where i hadn't - added it there too: didn't solve it.

then i found bug-eyed me had accidentially put the line into the imagespace- instead of the general-section in one of the inis, fixed this: didn't solve it.

couple of exorcism-saves/-loads/-restarts of course didn't fix anything either.

currently i'm contemplating if maybe an axe into my keyboard would fix anything :-)

well assuming this MASTERFILE: LOCALIZATION: Lookup failed for ID: 0x00012584 from strings file: STRINGS/Skyrim_ENGLISH.DLSTRINGS
line refers to the game installation file structure, they're all there. for more languages than i speak :-)
(you don't happen to know that that id in there stands for, do you?)

but you would imagine a lot more people would be complaining if this was the case?
googling "MASTERFILE: LOCALIZATION: Lookup failed" brings up 8,850 results, all about this.
solution quotas being meager...

Yah, I kinda thought you'd add it everywhere and still draw a blank.

We could do with one of 8850 being on here (one who has fixed it).

sorry man, I got no idea now ... If I spot anything relevant on my travels I'll post, though

Best of luck.

you know how desperation sometimes has you take chances with the weird & the odd -- and sometimes get away with it..? :-))
i kind of sublimated the axe2keyboard-approach, _kicking_ the language line from any ini and deleting the strings-folder in whole.
got me a really spectacular 2-cryptic-red-x-messageboxes-crash from ck :-)
so i let steam validate me a new strings-folder, and since then (with still _no_ more language-lines in any ini), all 27 lines of the same bloody error are miraculously gone.
1/8850 :-))
