if you are playing a sneak type character and plan on using runes and detect life, how important is silent casting?

I know runes make noise no matter what, and it would seem like detect life's range is great enough that you don't have to worry about using it to close to enemies, but does anyone have any better insight into this? Can you get away without using it, or should you just pick it up anyway?
