How to kill a dragon as a melee player?

Especially when the dragon is always in the air. I also do not use any magic spells with the exception of dragon shouts.

use a bow and arrow? since arrows are weightless now there is little reason now to at least have a hunting or long bow

Like Jon Snow says, stick it with the pointy end. Anyway you just have to side step it once it lands and hack at it. Get it hurt enough and it won't fly anymore.

You need to wait for them to land then sprint up to them.

I think it's a bit of experimentation, I read a similar post where someone waited it out and healed themselves until the dragon landed on its own. The only other option would be to call the dragon a big fairy-girl and challenge it to a fist fight.

Shoot arrows at it when it hovers. Its a little annoying but eventually it lands. Then you just steam in and let em have it and spam potions when needs be.

Surprised at how many posts I've seen from people struggling with dragons, I find them too easy, and I pretty much only use melee. I always forget I have shouts :D Every dragon I have faced lands sooner or later, at which point you can hack it into dogfood.

Hope for a few mobs around the area.

A few times, I've been able to wade in and beat on the Dragon from the back or sides while it was fighting a giant, guard or even a wolf.

My general rules when it comes to fighting Dragons:

1. Fight on YOUR terms. If he catches you in a bad spot, use cover and move to a better location to draw him out.
2. Don't be afraid to toss a few shouts at him to show him who's boss.
3. When he appears to land, prepare to sprint for one of his flanks at his wing.
4. Slash with frenzied rage, but keep wary of his head. Always be ready to give his face a good bashing if he attempts to voice a complaint.

Rinse and repeat as necessary.

They land periodically to give you the chance to attack.

But I find the dragon fights really awkward...Probably I'm the only one but well...Putting aside the fact you're attacking a heavy armored(looking) creature with mundane iron swords and wooden arrows,I find it kinda game-like for the dragon to land and fly and land and fly...while it can finish you off without landing once...I think dragon fights should've been more centered on shouts (and they should have had bigger effects) to bind/harm the dragon and probably prevent its escape.

I would strongly recommend using the 'Marked for death' shout, as it weakens enemies and reduces their health, and works even on dragons. It doesn't reduce their health much at all, but it does increase your effectiveness against them with melee weapons.

As of yet I've never used magic or a bow against a dragon. I simply put on a helmet and fight it using dual skyforge steel swords and dragon shouts.

EDIT:
Spoiler
The dragonrend shout you learn in the main quest knocks dragons out of the air AFAIK, so that might be a good option to pursue if you're having trouble

Run around like a scared female dog. Then attack it when it lands, also use dragon shouts if you have them.

I wait for it to land and launch an attack on someone else, run up and hack away with a decent battle axe and retreat before being killed. Heal then repeat or finish off with bow and arrows.
Worked like a charm for me :)

Shouting at it is a good rule of thumb.

But they land at certain intervals, to help give melee players a chance.

Obviously as fictitious creatures of massive scale we don't really have much in real life to go on. One way of thinking about it would be that a creature of that size when hovering is using so much energy to keep its massive frame still in the air that it needs to land now and again to go rest its wings. I have yet to be eaten by one or picked up and thrown which is very disappointing. If I was that big would take every opportunity to chow down on humans sized creatures, tin-foil wrapper and all.

Make sure you are being attacked by it (the music should be playing/red dot on your compass) and you may have to find the proper terrain for it to land and stop strafing you.

to be fair to make it land you have to hit it with like 50 arrows depending on skill and bow... if you have a flawless glass bow and 50 archery like me it will take less, but if you dont use bows and only have hunting bow and iron arrows it takes a lot.

Uh... he said how to kill it as a melee player, and you say bow and arrow. Ts.

I think they quite often come down to you, actually. I managed to kill them with axes quite often.

Roll an Orc Warrior specced for 2 hander, and when ever you come across a Dragon, be patient - lure it somewhere, and find a good spot to block it's breath of fire, and when it lands, use the Beserk ability, and keep laying power attacks into the big scaly beast. If you're stacking more stamina than HP and using a less than average weapon, use a fire resist pot.

Yeah I usually just have a bow hot keyed and switch to that to shoot it whilst its in the air, find a tree or a solid object I can hide behind when it breathes fire and shoot whilst it's flying around, make sure your in an open space where the dragon can land otherwise he will just keep flying around, when hes on the ground run at him and use sprint shout, then just hack hack hack :)

I like to think my damaging shouts (the Fire and Force ones) are bringing down the dragons I fight, but most likely they are just landing because they are getting bored of listening to me yell at them xD
