To kill "a main dragon" would take 3-4 hours if you're glued on main quest, but that is not how you play TES games.

My flatmate plays Skyrim as a shooter and only did the main quest. Apparently he got to the final stage around level 10 after no more than 10 hours of playing the game. He got stuck because there is some kind of puzzle and I refused to help him solve and spoil my game (after clocking more than 100 hours I am level 16 and not even a third through the main quest). So it all depends of how you want to play. The beauty of Skyrim...

On my first character, I think the Main Quest took me around 20 hours to do, but that includes some minor sidetracking. You can probably do it in an hour or five, but why you want to do that is beyond me. You shouldn't play Skyrim to complete it as quick as you can - or, at least, that's my opinion.

It took me around a hundred hours the first time.

Honestly, you're not going to have much time if you just sprint to the quest marker, fast travel to the next location, rinse and repeat. The most amazing moments come from strolling through the wilderness, soaking in the atmosphere and immersing yourself in lore. The game is amazingly detailed, and with all of the lore behind the series, the atmosphere is amazing. I myself have made it past 1000 hours, and have only completed the Main Questline a handful of times.

You could probably complete it in, say, five hours if you rushed. But I wouldn't recommend that - take your time, enjoy yourself. If you're like me, you might forget there even is a main quest!

After 300 hours I still haven't killed the "main dragon". Does it answer your question? :)
