How to make the game harder?

Post » Sat Dec 29, 2012 9:41 am

Anyone know any good rules to play Skyrim with? Like Iron Man Rules for Oblivion.

I just got Skyrim for christmas and I'd like to make the game a little harder or emersive.

Aside from adjusting the difficulty slider, you could set up your own rules as well such as limiting potion consumption, what to wear and wield, and what perks/effects to not use. Avoiding things like the stones can contribute a little, but if you really want a challenge do a DiD session. :)

I haven't tried it yet, but here is an idea I had.

1: Play a warrior, and put all of your +10 Health, Stamina or Magicka into Magicka, thus keeping your health and Stamina at 100.
2: Completely avoid crafting. No upgrading, no making or enchanting your own gear. No potions whatsoever.
3: Only use food to heal yourself. No potions or restoration.
4: No fast ravel or carriages.

I have to not improve my gear via smithing, and use certain restrictions such as a limit of 5 health potions on me at all times and things like that. The game gets so boring if you super smith/enchant all the uber gear. The only gear I allow myself to improve is iron. Probably my favorite looking set anyway.

1: Yeah, that seems like a good idea until you start hitting high level Deathlords. Or any high level mage who will toast you before you even know they are there. No, you need health and stamina - just don't smith your gear.

What they really need is for enemies to continue to level with you all the way up to 81. Why should they stop? We also need a bunch of new, harder enemies to appear at high levels.

As well as not leveling up, too!

leveling with no perks or no leveling at all. can only carry so many potions, so many arrows, that kind of thing. a warrior that is unable to enchant or a mage unable to smith. granted first playthrough you wanna do everything and try everything. perfectly understandable and i encourage it. but the second playthrough you may want to do this...

Play with being only level 1. Even though I was rocking heavy armor, those two handed bandits kept OHKing me or putting my health to 1. So you can wear whatever ya wants, and the game will still be challenging.

The ultimate goal IMO is that you can OHK any man/mer/elf, but also be OHK'es by them.

  • Don't use any perks
  • Don't use guardian stones
  • Don't use followers
  • Hardest difficulty setting
  • Dead is Dead rules
  • Download a darker dungeons mod, ideally close to pitch blackness without a torch
  • Turn off the HUD (which everyone should be doing anyway) and never look at the map

Turn off the HUD

turn off the music

play on expert or above

only carry a realistic carry amount

dont use fast travel (wagons ok)

1 session 1 save (less extreme DiD)

No healing mid battle

Dont jump in water, find a way round. The water would be too cold and no sense getting clothes wet.

No reloading if you make a mistake, face the consequences of all your decisions/errors.

Thought this thread was gonna be about what Bethesda can do.. :(

Well I would say turn off waypoints, but everbody knows the game is unplayable without waypoints.. Thanks to Bethesda making the game playable for casuals.. Umm, I really can't think of much..

Mods are really the best way to increase the difficulty if you're playing on PC. Try Duel Combat realism, cutthroat merchants and darker dungeons and interiors.

My other suggestion, which increases difficulty/enjoyment for me is to almost never use fast travel. Some aren't patient enough for this, but I think it really increases the difficulty when traveling through areas filled w/ bears and trolls etc.
