how many dragon souls must i have to unlock new shouts?

Post » Mon Jun 04, 2012 4:14 am

I have 2 dragon souls and 2 shouts- fire breath and frost breath, neither of which I can unlock. They are greyed out, and when I attempt to activate either, a message appears stating that I need dragon souls to unlock them. I would have thought that 2 was enough. How many do I need?

you need to continue the main quest, learn the (other) shout from the master, then only you can use the dragon soul.

Nope, on PC. I meant that in the menu screen i am not allowed access to those to shouts.

OK, so i guess i need to meet another master? I did go to another one of those plces where you unlock a shout, this one in the hotsprings near eldergleam snctuary, and soaked up the power from that text. I think that was the frost shout. I have killed two dragons since then.

You must enter in your Magic Menu. On the list at your right you see SHOUTS. Click on it. Then click on your new shout (greyish) it says you have to unlock a soul. So click on your soul and press the adequate key.

EDIT: On PC the key is R. But click on the SOUL before... I had the same problem at the start...

Every dragon soul unlocks 1 word of a shout.

You need 3 words to master any given shout. So dragon souls per mastered shout.

To put it another way, you have to spend the dragon souls to unlock a shout so you can use it.

You need to advance the story past Dragon Rising. Once you receive your free shout from defeating the dragon outside of Whiterun, then you can unlock your others.

If you don't kill your first dragon in Whiterun (like me, started only after level 20) you will not see any dragons at all. So you cannot have any souls. No dragons, no souls... But you can collect the words until the day you start the MQ. Killing the dragon in Whiterun makes dragons spawn all over Skyrim.

LOL yea, during my first play through I was like - OMG why can't I shout? I have like 5 dragon souls! I also came to the forums and read up on it. I hadn't noticed the menu and that I had to press R to unlock the shouts! (on PC) ;)
