How many perk trees is too many?

My first Dohvakiin is lvl 27 and has points primarily in Destruction and Enchanting with moderate points in Smithing (for crafting and improving armor) and a few points in Light Armor (for defenses), plus about 5 perks in One-Handed Archery and Restoration that never really did much for me.

I feel like this first character's perks were spread out a bit too much, and I am making a second character that I'd like to be more focused. I enjoy dual-wield styles of combat and I want something more in-your-face than the squishy hit-and-run of my Mage, so I intend to perk in to One-Handed and Heavy Armor, but I also want to perk up Smithing and Enchanting to craft myself and my followers really good gear. Curious, though, if spreading across four perk trees is a mistake (especially considering the mish-mash my first character turned out to be)

Thoughts?

Do what thou wilt, but my rule of thumb is OB had 7 majors out of 21, 6 in Skyrim is equivalent. You don't need loads of perk to get your best use of a skill (unless it's illusion), try 3 with a bunch and 3 with a few. Just a thought. 4 skills is pretty focused, and you may find your character is a one-trick pony after a long while. It's always nice to tackle the odd situation in a different manner now and then.

Perks for me are the hardest to figure. I have several skills already at 100 but not many perks in the tree. Only level 59 but still trying my best to follow what my character actually needs. Early on I put atleast one perk in each tree with the exception of Heavy and Two-handed. Not going to use either of these. Magic seems to take so much longer to skill-up.
My "Nord Warrior" with emphasis on stealth, archery, light armor and one-handed seems to be working well. I did unballance this with "Smithing" as i wanted Dragon Armor ASAP. I'm starting to notice some things with the perk trees as when, one has 100 skill but only 3 perks and now seems to be suffering somewhat as I level up. Not sure if it really is a problem. So as far as a mistake, I'm not ready to admit failure. Although I don't give much credit into some of the perks and why I would actually see the need for some. Ex: 10% chance of paralysing? vs 25% chance to do critical damage! I did some basic math and there is no way I'm going to get all the perks I want for this character so now I'm left with the choice dilema.
Skip the Magic Perks for the others or vice versa. Follow my magical warrior ideas and skip some of the physical perks.
