How to realize a courier?

Post » Mon Nov 19, 2012 8:51 am

hi I have used the tutorial to make a courier quest that reuse the vanilla one to deliver a message , I suspect since after dawnguard my quest doens't work anymore that it coul dbe related to that , so I wanted to try to make a new courier from scratch that is endependant from vanilla ,is there any tutorial out there?

I was working on one but got sidetracked. The vanilla courier is made to accommodate several different quests, and I made mine similar to that one, even though I only needed him for one quest. I made my courier and put him the same cell as the vanilla one, gave him his own container and x marker, etc. After that I made a sort of general courier quest that would start the courier if he had such and such letter, then place him in a village or city and have him greet the character. For that step you would want to look at the vanilla courier and see what aliases he has and what packages he gets when he is activated. It will probably take some trial and error.

If I get some more time I'll try to revisit the courier and make a full write-up in the wiki. There is one in the wiki now but it's really more complex than most people need I think, it was definitely more than I needed and as a result wasn't that helpful. I found that looking at the vanilla courier was more helpful. Also making my own courier rather than using the existing one wasn't that difficult and allowed me a little more freedom, the only downside is not having the "official" courier dialogue with the voice actor and such.

well can't the dialogued be "copied?" or voice acted perhaps?

Anyway do you have time to write that down ? it woudl be quite helpfull to not mess with vanilla ...

Have or are you using the vanilla courier right now in any quest?

Because for me the courier is not delivering anything anymore , it used to work untill I installed the patch for dawnguard.

I am not using the vanilla courier, but I basically set my courier up just like the vanilla one. I just used a microphone to record my own ridiculous dialogue because it was just for a test it wasn't to release a mod or anything. I will try to find time tonight to go back over it and write it up.

Does your custom courier use a reference alias on the note? I found that to be an issue in the existing tutorial and I believe it broke in my case so I couldn't use it.

Hmm I don't know that I've tested it since I installed Dawnguard recently... I'll check.

Edit: Well I was working on things and got into writing the tutorial so I didn't have time to check out if it is broken or not. In the process of going back over what I did with the courier I was reminded of how thorny the whole thing is and I only got about halfway through it. I will try to finish it this week since I went ahead and started it.

Yes, I just tested it this morning and it still works.

Edit: Here is what I have done on the wiki so far:

http://www.creationkit.com/Simple_custom_courier

It's not done yet as I still have to put in a few crucial steps toward the end for it to work right, but it's a start. You can go through what is there right now and then later finish it up when I get it all done. One thing I'm having trouble remembering is how the adding your letter to the courier's container worked, and I think I just ended up putting the letter in the courier's inventory. Hmm.
