How Skyrim should have looked like on PC.

Post » Sat Aug 18, 2012 5:37 am

Oblivion was a benchmark game when it came out.
It had the best graphics we had seen to that point.
Then Crysis took the leadership of graphics.
If the series continued the tradition...

This is how Skyrim should have looked like on pc:

Oblivion was infamous because only super high end PCs could play it. Me, I'd rather not spend over 1000 dollars for a better PC that looks slightly better. Besides, the artstyle of Skyrim fits Skyrim, the artstyle of Crysis fits Crysis, it's a bit unfair to compare the two.

No thanks, I'd rather not having ultrarealistic graphics in a TES game. They just don't fit.

On a side note, that would look better Elswyr than in Skyrim.

And with Mods, you can make the game look that good if you want.

Nah.. not yet at least.

I've installed all the best graphics mods I could find,4096x4096 textures, the best ENB...
It does't reaches Crysis's graphics by a longshot.

I'm not clear on what exactly you're aiming at. Realistic graphics is different from good graphics you know. Skyrim has its own graphic style, which doesn't have anything to do with realism.

yeah, it's hard to make a realistic style work when you have Dragons and undead.

Crysis is a first person shooter.
Skyrim is a huge, open-world game.

Besides, it makes little sense for Skyrim to look like that. Those graphics, combined with the open world an enormous amount of content would fry almost all systems. Why would they do that for a 'prettier' world?

I agree, besides even if Skyrim had better graphics and would be benchmark leader, it would not look like Crysis.

That looks phenomenal, makes me very optimistic about the future of gaming.

But how much story depth would be lost to get that? We've lost so much already. It's not terrible, I very much enjoy the game, but we all agree the game lacks consequences and choice.

Also I believe the games are built for consoles (Xbox 360 mainly iirc) then ported to PC, considering the majority of the market is consoles, that's who they need to please. Don't for one second believe the company cares about anything other than money.

Actually, the most intensive part of gaming in terms of processing power is cutscenes and animations, and Bethesda isn't exactly a leader in that.

I find the definition of ultra-realistic graphics changes over time to be honest, depending on the hardware.

Oh don't get Zelda really devoted fan on me.
The Elder Scrolls always tried to achieve believable graphics,Oblivion isn't cartoonish at all,or at least wasn't when it came out,it went for realism.
Don't say no to evolution. That's what dinosaurs did and died.

Story depth ? That's work of the writer.
It depends on the talent of the writer, has nothing to do with the limitations of graphics engines and hardware.

Besides that,Crytek is also a company that wants money, and they also release games for consoles, but the PC versions of their games have serious graphics superiority than console versions.

Evolution isn't going to save you from a meteor.

And Oblivion is cartoonish. Granted Oblivion came out during the beginning of the 360 launch. and at that point, everything looked photorealistic.

It does... I guess something like my definition would be the ones in the OP's video. Smooth and realistic games are nice, given that they're not too "heavy" on the performance, but sometimes too realistic isn't the way to go IMO.

Oblivion is not cartoonish? Did we play the same game? I am not saying no to evolution, it's just that to each its own style, that's it. Look at Pixar: even though their graphic style is not realistic do they look like they are making bad graphics?

Well, even the one in Op's video will become dated and ugly in 10 years.
I find cartoonish graphics do better at standing the test of time. Look at Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, that game looks just as good now as it did back then, while games like Oblivion and Morrowind, which looked amazing for it's time, look really really ugly today.

I agree that Wind Waker's graphics look cool even today, and that yes if cartoony graphics are done right they can stay look good forever.
But honestly that's not TES style. :/
I mean the series haven't showed as this far that they are targeting the series that way.

Graphics are not important to a game at all. The art style is, as is the gameplay and story. That's why I didn't like BF3 very much; yes, very realistic graphics but it felt too shallow for me to play for more than a few hours.
