How to stop NPC zoom when in conversation?

Post » Sat Feb 12, 2011 5:27 pm

Hi all

I have not played Fallout 3 in years and just got NV. I was wondering how you disable the NPC zoom, when speaking to them? I cant remember, but I think it was just an .ini tweak ?

Thanks for the assistance!

actually, that will change the 1st person perspective of all situations, not just conversation.

What the OP wants is to change these settings in fallout_default.ini

fDialogMinDistance
fDialogMaxDistance

I use 1200 as min, 2000 as max and it feels a lot more natural. Maybe the OP would like setting them both to the same number (like 1500) for consistency.

Thanks for the reply guys, is the ini file located in the root install directory? Or in the documents folder for NV?

If it is in the root directory, I tried changing it as you suggested, but it still zooms in when in conversation. I don't want any zoom at all. What would I set it at for that?

Actually, the value you want to set is fDlgFocus=16.0 in the fallout_default.ini file. That is the value I used for Oblivion, Fallout3, and NV. The value can be increased the maximum distance at which your cursor turns to the talk icon.

Edit: Sorry, I forgot to mention that the value doesn't exist in NV, you have to add it. Add it to the [Interface] section.

Thanks, is the correct default. ini file in the root install directory? I added the line in there and nothing happens still... any ideas?

Also, how does a higher or lower value correspond to the zoom factor?

When starting from the launcher try editing fallout_default.ini in the directory where FONV is installed, otherwise you can also try editing fallout.ini or falloutprefs.ini in the /MyGames/FalloutNV folder

hmm ok, I have edited all three files to include the (fDlgFocus="a lower value number here") and nothing changes, I guess the command is treated differently from the other games?

I made my change in:

c:\program files\steam\steamapps\common\fallout new vegas\fallout_default.ini

I made it the first line in the [Interface] section.

I believe the value works like this, it tells the game how close to zoom in on someone's face. If I recall, the value was something like 2.1 in Oblivion. That means the game should zoom the camera in until the camera is 2.1 feet from someone's face, unless of course you are already closer than that. By changing it to 16, you are telling the game to put the camera no closer than 16 feet from the person's face, unless you are closer than that.

I figured out the 16.0 value by standing as far away from someone as I could in Olbivion and initiating a conversation. I just kept increasing the value until I found that 16.0 seemed to be the max distance I could be from someone to initiate a conversation. By setting its value the the same value as the max distance you can initiate the conversation from, you eliminate the zoom in at all possible distances.
