How's the dual wield melee?

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 7:55 am

Compared to other options, like sword magic, sword shield, 2h and just a 1h, how does dual wield stack up? Is it worth it? Is it clunky? Does it have potential?

This is the only real thing i've wondered since day 1. We all know dual wield cant block or defend, which means its death dealing capability will have to be incredibly high to make up for it.

dual wielding has a great potential to be incredible for DPS. There are perks that raise it's damage and such and you can always shout at your weapons to increase attack speed.

Imagine hitting something with a sword in your right hand.

Now imagine hitting something with a sword in your left hand.

Now imagine doing them simultaneously= dual wielding!

redguard + adrenaline rush + dual wield + one-handed perks + dragon shout to speed up attack speed + light armor perks for increased stamina regen, less weight, occasional damage negation = Boss

The newly released dual wield perks make dual wielding seem potentially really awesome and a more than viable fighting style even without the ability to block.

Where are these dual wield perks? Are they seperate from the one handed perks?

No. There are 2 perks in the one handed tree oriented towards dual wielding. I was not that impressed, but hey doing more damage is good. While it may be viable in the balanced sense, I am not sure it will be viable in stays fun sense. There is just less to it that the other styles.

I agree. I think Dual Wielding is a class all in its own. It should have been another tree. At least there ARE some perks though.

I guess though i'll have to wait and see before i'm convinced its actually a worth while path.

I AM now however wondering if those 1h power attack perks, work while dual wielding...

Due to some videos I've watched (Not leaked) I believe one can parry with one handed weapons...

Same here. The only question is, is twin-swords, sword and dagger or twin-daggers better.

Dual Flurry (2) - Dual weilding attacks are 20% faster.
Dual Savagery - Dual weilding power attacks do 50% bonus damage.

The perks btw.

EDIT: Oh, and the second perk answers the questions over power attacks I guess.

They're part of one-handed and are as follows:

Dual Flurry: Dual-wielding attacks are 20% faster (40%, rank 2)
Dual Savagery: Dual-wielding power attacks do 50% more damage

So if you focus on it you can potentially do ridiculous amounts of damage.

...and this is exactly why I've argued that no blocking when dual-wielding is a good decision. The damage they can potentially do is massive.

I'm gana tell you right now. What we know of it, twin daggers are garbage. No damage, but a good ambush. Even then, only after you really perked into them.

Unless there is SOME KIND of base damage buff... They will be ineffective for open combat.

And to really take advantage of dual wielding you should get two different types of weapons, like sword & mace, mace & axe or whatever. By doing this you exploit the specific advantage of each weapon (sword = critical hit, mace = ignore armor...)

Actually this would cost you alot more perks to do effectively.

Say you use a sword and an axe, You now need all the axe perks as well as all the sword perks for equal effectiveness. Otherwise you would just want both swords or both axes and save yourself 3 perks.

That's right, you would save 3 perks but the thing is that specializing in dual wielding is quite a cheap fighting style (in terms of perks). Basically, everything you need is nicely packed in one skill: one-handed. Imagine the large amounts of perks you save by doing that; all 2-handed and block perks for sure, then it all comes down to personal preferences.

In my opinion a dedicated dual wielder doesn't need more than one-handed, enchanting, smithing and light armor. You may add some alchemy for the poisons but that's it.
