How the hell do you play Deus Ex?

Post » Wed Sep 19, 2012 11:28 pm

After finally finishing Human Revolution, which in my opinion was just amazing both in storyline and gameplay aspects, I decided to playthrough the original Deus Ex since my OnLive Augmented Edition of Human Revolution came bundled with it. However, not only are the graphics ridiculously bad (even for the year of 2000), but the controls are so awkward. I mean, how the hell do you play it?

Controls are pretty standard. WASD for movement, space for jump and C for crouch. Dunno what the problem is....

Try looking at the manual: http://gamecontentgreen.yummy.net/deusixdemo/doc/Deusixmanual.pdf

edit: based on your most recent post, you may need to change your keybindings.

No, it isn't? The default keys are bound as left-mouse for quick save, X for crouch?

For the demo I played it was. Besides why not, you know, change the controls?

I know the controls, but they are literally all really dodgy. As I said, left-mouse button is quick save and X is crouch! I know I could rebind them, but that will take forever.

So do it then. At most it'll take like 2 minutes.

That's probably an issue with OnLive, not Deus Ex.

Yeah all you need to do is fix the key bindings, a job which really wont take long (print out a list of the default ones for reference?), and then you can enjoy one of the best shooters ever made...

That is odd. The controls on mine were pretty standard. It must be OnLive or something. Re-binding controls won't take that long.

Yes, but the mouse lags in the menus and changing it is so awkward! Curse you Onlive for non-standard controls! They probably re-bound them because some keyboard keys such as Alt+O are used for OnLive's navigation. I don't know. Probably just give the game a miss now...

It will take minutes to go through and return them all to default keybindings, even if you do it manually. if you map them back to default then you don't even really have to think about it.

It's obviously unplayable as your controls are messed up, it's nothing to do with the game or gameplay itself, the solution is simple if you want to play it...

Also, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2000_in_video_gaming#Notable_releases has a list of notable games released in 2000. I don't see how Deus Ex can be said to compare unfavourably to any of them, graphically...

You're going to give up because the mouse lags a bit?!

Talk about first world problems.

You ought to go through the menus using the arrow keys?

Sounds like it, because you definitely don't have the default controls. Just take a few minutes to rebind them. Trust me, Deus Ex is an experience that you don't want to miss out on.

No, I mean that the mouse feels all laggy even in the game itself. Strange because, in newer games that I'd assume to be more difficult work for the service such as Human Revolution, OnLive runs flawlessly on my internet connection.

I may rebind them. However, the game blatantly isn't running too well on the service so I may just give it a miss. Not too fussed about playing the original to be honest, despite how much people rave about it.

Resetting the controls to default doesn't reset them to what the game's manual, having looked online, says. Mouse lag is also a issue and, frankly, I don't really want to buy the game. Probably just give it a miss, but thanks for the suggestions everyone.
