I'm sorry if this is really stupid, but I've tried following the directions on uesp and whatever, but can't get the "player.moveto (refid)" console command to work.

Basically I just want to be able to teleport to an NPC who I have on a travel package across Skyrim (hence I can't predict what cell he's in).

If someone could explain in a step-by-step way how to successfully use this console command, I would be forever in your debt. Or at least in your debt for a few days on this forum.
