How useful is pickpocketing for a thief-type character?

Can I ignore this skill?

In past games, the good money was always in burglary.

Not too useful; but fun if you build your character right. A couple last perks allow you to strip enemies off weapons and armor; combine with Illusion spells you can sometimes laugh your butt off to the things the AIs do (fist fights, guards break into homes to grab random weapons...)

One time I took this Forsworn's sword and put it on a rock under the edge of a cliff of a fort in the Reach. He decided that he couldn't find any other weapon around, so he try to jump down to that rock to get his sword but he overshot and ended up hitting a couple other rocks on his way down. . What a moron!

If you want to make money as a thief; it is easier just to break into homes, steal stuff and/or open lock boxes rather than getting frustrated every time your pickpocket attempt fail (90% success chance is the cap)

Let's just say that if you're the thief-type there's no equal way to be literally flooded by money. You sell your stuff, you pick your money back. You train, you pick your money back. You name it. Perks, by contrast, are pretty useless unless you really want to strip enemies off just for the lulz.

Combined with using powerful poisons from Alchemy, Pickpocket is quite useful.

At lower levels [pickpocketing] can be a kinda stupid perk to invest in unless you like stealing things like arrows, keys, or jewelry, which can bring in a decent pay, if you use it often enough.
At higher levels pickpocketing can be a insanely useful perk for many missions from B&Es to escaping prison.
If you wanna get rich fast and be assured you'll never rot in prison, use pickpocketing. If you don't think it's needed, don't.
It's all personal needs when it really comes down to it.
I myself pickpocket very often and have make $50,000+, after playing for hours and hours.... and hours.

Pickpocketing is a useful skill, but it's hardly worth investing perk points in. After leveling Pickpocket high enough, pretty much anything will have a 90% chance anyways. If you have leftover perk points, by all means invest in Pickpocket; it's a lot of fun to have a town full of naked guards.

Pickpocket really comes in handy, you get to strip off random people's clothes. I stole everyone's clothes in Skyrim, including the Guards, Jarls, Nobles, Commoners, etc.

There ain't nothing quite like stripping an enemy naked, set him on fire, slit his throat, and summon two angry Dremoras to murder his friends and family.

Welcome to the dark side.... MUHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!
