I've wondered this myself. Since children cannot die I wouldn't worry about that, but I'd be a little upset if I came home, and my wife was dead due to skeevers lol

Well i have Aela She would not die by Skeevers. I upgraded Her Armor and Weapons + She has to go down Multiple Times.

My Stuart will be Farkas or Vilkas someone who can stop those things. (If they can)

I don't want to come home seeing a dragon on my roof

From what I have read, part of the DLC contains "kidnappers", so I guess there will be quests where you will have to rescue members of your family at some point.

I'm hoping its gonna be one of those things where problems only arise when you are in the area. I.e you get home and talk to your wife and THEN a giant/skeever hoard will spawn

If you aren't there the cells don't exist and thus nothing can happen. Unless the NPC is scripted to die they won't die without you around.

I don't know about that... giants wiped out an entire Orc stronghold outside Riften and I wasn't even there. I had a courier give me a letter with 90 gold saying the chief had died. I fast traveled there and sure enough... the old Shaman lady who sits in the long house, and the girl who smiths at the back of the at the hut were all that was left. I found no bodies of anyone else and had to kill a giant out front. Keep in mind I had already completed the quest for this stronghold and had Malacath's hammer sitting in my breezehome. I had performed the quest to stop the giants back when I was lv 10 and I'm lv 57.

SO yes I am concerned that my house will get wiped out while I'm away.

It can happen :(

NO it can't you were obviously passing by in the same cell when it happend but didn't personally witness it. AREAS outside the cell your in DO NOT exist. The game does not load areas your not in. Out door areas can be quite large its not difficult to pass by that orc stronghold and have it annihlated by giants before you get close enough to actually engage in battle

Thats the thing. I wasn't in the area at all. The courier got me when I entered the Rift from Riverwood before I headed up to Windhelm. Thats how far away I was from the stronghold.

I was in Marakath after the battle of Whiterun before the Courier caught up to me about
Spoiler
Severio Pelagia
who is scripted to die during that batle. The courier can take days or weeks to actually appear.

I'm hoping it will be triggered like a random event, where you'll have to be near your house before an attack happens.

edit: @Ben42 darn, you beat me to it.

It will probably be more like radiant quests for the companions or the mage guild. You ask your wife or Steward "is there anything I should be aware of" and then they tell you about the problem which otherwise wouldn't exist without you asking.

I like this idea, too. As long as I don't come home to total destruction without a chance to do something about it. lol

Doubtful. Most quests in the game wait for you to complete them, that's a basic aspect of Skyrim's open world: what you want, WHEN you want. Your family will almost certainly not be in peril until you are in position to save them.

And if you're worried, just keep an old save handy and reload it as needed.

My guess, and it is just a guess, is that it will be a bit like defending the realm in Shivering Isles. Ask your stuard what's going on, they say "well a giant has been scaring the cows". Guess we'll find out next week.

bandits killing your children while the bandit chief has his way with your wife. That would be one effed up DLC.

Gosh, don't know but here in Alaska we teach our kids to use a weapon at an early age in case a bear comes in the house.
