How would YOU improve Dishonored?

Post » Wed Nov 07, 2012 10:07 am

Alright I've been seeing some topics on how they had wished Dishonored had more "interactivity" and such, so if you could add and/or remove something from Dishonored what would it be?

I would probably start by extending the first person view by being able to see Corvo's arms when you interact with things, like pick up a bottle or pull a leaver etc.

Another thing that dissapointed me about Dishonored was the sword combat. WHY can you only slash and block? There should be more option like knock them out unconsius with your sword like what the guard did to you at the start and even just stabbing.

Two things, one may not be possable. Have and open world, you can do the quests in any order, (within reason). And have more side quests, like building up the base of operations, convincing people to becme allies, etc.

I'd like to see a kick (as in Dead Island) that would knock your opponent back a bit and give you time to think your next move.

Add more world. I want to see the other islands. I want to go on a whaling ship. I want to just see more, so that's what I would do to improve it.

I like this one. An option to take down someone quickly and non lethally, but at the risk of making a lot of noise.

After playing through the game once (I got it on Saturday) going for high Chaos and doing it again aiming for low Chaos the only issues I have are:

1) Ropes and chains are annoying to climb up, you can hardly even check and see if where you're climbing up to is safe because you have to face upwards at an angle to even go up. I would've just made it pushing the joystick one way or pressing a key instead of doing either and having to face that direction.

2) I'd have added more missions to go after lesser people before going after major allies of the Lord Regent. Going after a big chunk of parliament would've extended the game a lot.

3) I would've made it so you can take out an enemy while in combat without killing them besides sleeping darts, you only get ten and if you're spotted you're kind of screwed.

Those are basically my only gripes about the game which aren't big enough to ruin the experience much. It's not the best game to come out recently but I think it's really good.

How to improve: I would start by making the characters more fleshed out. Remember Benny from Thief? He's not gameplay or story essential, but he adds a lot to the feel of the game. Basically, I want to see more idle chat between the characters and make them feel like actual characters (although they certainly look very striking). I would also like more levels similar to the earlier ones with more paths to take rather than the relatively linear later levels.http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/extra-punctuation/10016-Idle-pvssyr-Builds-Character explains more clearly what I'm trying to say.

As for the gameplay, perhaps give us a few more non-lethal options like gas grenades or mines. More depth to the sword combat could also help (slashing, stabbing, thrusting etc.)

Also, show us some of the more industrial (whaling) parts of the city and perhaps even that clock tower.

Bigger world and more side quests. I also want to be able to look in a mirror. The mirrors already in the game are so dirty you can't a thing.

If we get mod tools in the future, I'd love to add a crafting system, possibly with its own upgrades and perks.

You find so many interesting objects in the world, like hemlock essence, copper wire, etc., it would be fun to be able to use them to craft traps or various items.

Most of my criticisms are in the story area, so it's hard to talk about them without spoilers.

Spoiler
I would have made the "twist" more nuanced. To have all the conspirators turn on Corvo didn't make sense. He had proven his worth at that point, and hadn't done anything to threaten them- the opposite. I think it would have made a richer story if the Conspirators split down the middle and Corvo had to choose sides. Lengthen the main story arc, rather than another rescue mission of Emily which ends up being too repetitive. Display less of a black/ white dichotomy in the political landscape which ultimately to me ends up seeming naive. I was disappointed, for instance, to learn that Burrows had introduced the rat plague. He would have been more interesting and less cartoonish if he had been an ambitious man responding to a natural disaster.

The part I really did like about the story was Corvo and Emily, and Corvo's characterization being first person and more blank slate. A lot of people are saying otherwise, that they want a voiced PC or more fleshed out PC, so I have to say I strongly disagree and love the way Arkane did it.

For your chain problem you can go into the settings and there is an option for the way you move up and down chains, I can't remember the exact name but it made it a lot better for me.
