How do you deal with long drives

Post » Sun Jul 08, 2012 7:02 pm

Here soon im about to go on a 1300 mile road trip, which will be about a 22 hour drive.

I want to get it done in one shot, as i am constrained as far as how much time i have to get there and back.

What do you do to stay awake, stay comfortable, and enjoy long long rides such as that.

Also, i don't drink coffee and energy drinks have no effect on me.

I only have experience as a passenger on long trips, and even then it's only like a twelve hour drive.

I had a 900 mile drive earlier in the year, and it took 12 hours. But the roads were all 65-70 mph. Anyways, I had my mom with me and we took turns driving every 3 hours or so. But I was really tired towards the end. Playing music loud, talking to yourself or someone else if there's a person there..having the windows down etc.

There is no way to stay comfortable, you have to stop every so often and get out and stretch otherwise you'll be cramped up. Enjoying the ride? Well, I didn't enjoy mine at all, I was way too tired all the time. But I found the best time to travel is during the day, night time you get really sleepy.

I wouldn't recommend going all the way through if it's going to take 22 hours, but if you're not driving as fast it might not be as bad.

Loud music, a good friend, and a bottle to piss in.

get about 12 CDs of all your favorite music, or one looping one of the nyan cat song, and blare it as loud as possible. that will keep you awake no matter what.
in all seriousness though, find something engaging to listen to, usually an audiobook or some music that does not put you to sleep. Listen to that as you drive.

Do not try to overdo it and go all day driving. that is just dangerous, especially if you are the only person in the car. One thing that we would hate to see is a dead forumgoer.

If you are having trouble staying awake, a brainwave monitor and a schock collar will also work very well.

Get alot of sleep before you go. Get gas when you need it, and make sure you are within range of a station. Take a jerrycan if you are going to be far from a station.

I drink soda and I make sure to stop if I have to pee. I don't find long drives to bad as long as I am not tired as hell. Energy drinks have to effect on me but for some reason sodas do. I tried to drink some energy drinks one time when I had a five hour drive a head of me, I almost fell asleep a couple of times.

In the end though as long as I am driving it doesn't feel as long. Longest drive I ever did in one go as a drive was about ten hours. As a passenger I remember going from New Brunswick through Quebec to Ontario without stopping, man I had to pee so bad.

well the 22 hours thing is based off of google maps projections, so who know exactly how long it will be i guess.

I do know that it will be a bit over 700 miles, excluding the first 25 miles it will all be interstate so i should be able to go 65-70 miles an hour (maybe in some places which are straight and i think i can get away with it i might be going considerably faster) so maybe it will be closer to 12 hours.

I do not think sleep is going to be a big problem though, im used to staying up 2-3 days in a row, my biggest concern is that i will get really bad muscle cramps.

I am doing this drive alone though, and ive got to one shot it if possible. Although i will stop in a motel if i do get too tired.

Well then yeah, if you get to tired that's the thing to do or at a trucker gas station, because you'd be able to sleep in your car if need be.

For the muscle cramps, it's not a big deal to get off at a rest stop every 200-300 miles or so and stretch your legs out. That's what I had to do. Also at 70 miles an hour for 700 miles, that's 10 hours. So it's probably not going to take as long as you think. Just like I said, it's a lot easier to drive during the day so get most of your driving done then. Because at night, even if you're not tired it's not as easy.

But yeah, I don't ever want to do a drive that long again. Granted I didn't get as much sleep as I should have on the way there, but on the way back I did and I was still falling asleep.

Well, if the ride is 3 hours or more, you could eliminate most if not all your boredom by practicing your human contact pleasureness skill, a blanket and kleenex is highly advised. If that's not for you, like the other 100.13% of the population, try sleeping. If I go on the road, I make sure not to sleep beforehand so I can just fade out for most of the trip.

Ouch, really? I only get the motion sickness if I look at any form of text that is in the vehicle. If I even glance at a novel, I'm out cold fairly quickly.

You drive too slow.
What do you do to stay awake, stay comfortable, and enjoy long long rides such as that.
Drink coffee/Mt. Dew/Dr. Pepper, seldom comfortable, never enjoy it. I hate driving and I just get it over with.
Also, i don't drink coffee and energy drinks have no effect on me.
Get an ice pick and stab your leg every 5 minutes.

Yeah, I've been driving from Sweden, a trip that takes many hours. I can get real sick from trips like that. It's fatiguing and I'm suffering from extreme motion-sickness (I've been sick on a cruiseship and it is worse than the worst hangovers in the world. You almost want to kill yourself).

So yeah, even when I'm driving, my motion-sickness can be triggered and I need to take a break in order to collect myself.

I've only got a hangover once, I was being foolish with vodka, and it was very unpleasant. It interfered with my sleep! If you think your sickness is worse than that, that must be painful. Have you seen a doctor?

Nope, I've never visited a doctor about it. It's not that bothersome, unless I am to be in a vehicle or something for long periods of time. I usually take some motion-sickness medications before taking these trips. I don't know if they help or not, but I may or may not get terribly sick during the travel.

I consider it a blessing everytime I've been on a long trip without feeling ill once.

Hmmm......

Is your vehicle normally well ventilated? Do you have windows open or an AC running? I know if a vehicle isn't ventilated for me, I get sick quickly. The bus I take to school always has teh windows closed in the winter time but has the heat jacked up and even though my bus ride is only a half hour to get to my house, I would always get sick and take a nap when I got home.

Mhm indeed, ventilation does play a big part in it. I often find myself opening the windows of the car when I'm not feeling too good. It's usually not that hot around here, but when it is, the heat inside the car makes the air almost impossible to breathe in, which makes me feel sick.

I always make sure that the vehicle is well ventilated before I go on long rides, and it helps a lot. :)

Ventilation also helps when on the verge of fainting, I would know from personal experience in biology class!

Have a cooler in the back seat with your favorite beverages (if your favorite beverage is alcohol, choose something else ), a CD folder filled with some good tunes, plenty of snacks and layered clothes to avoid being too hot/cold.

Rememeber to pull over and stop the car before getting something out of the cooler.

I have never been the driver on long trips. I usually just chill out in the passenger seat with a good book and a soda. If we drive the RV I can pull out my laptop and play some games too.

Derp, I missed the part where you corrected and said it's a 1300 mile road trip. Hmm, sounds like Epic fun to me :)

To answer the actual question: I love long drives, even though they are hell on my back. Get a good selection of CDs to go through, pack some food, and enjoy all the new scenery that you get to see

I usually just sit in silence so I don't have any distractions. As for staying awake. Get a huge bag of sunflower seeds and a cup to put the shells in and a big thing of water. It keeps me awake when I need to go on long trips. Usually the whole bag is gone by the time I get there and back.
