how do you like your zombies?

Post » Tue Nov 19, 2013 6:49 pm

So I just watched Dawn of the Dead (2004) last night and enjoyed it. This got me thinking of all the older movies like Night of the Living Dead and the original Dawn of the Dead.

So what I want to know is how do you people like your zombies? Should they be fast or slow? Should they be resurrected by a virus or some kind of religious/magical curse, rising from the graves rather than an obscure infection that randomly destroys the world overnight?

And should they have a shred of 'intelligence' like in the Walking Dead when the zambie lady tries to turn the doorknob, as an example. Or should they be totally mindless?

Just curious as to what people think. I'm a total noob with zombie movies. My favourite is probably Shaun of the Dead :3 that's how little I know of the genre. I want to get into it, though.

28 Days Later zombies* are the best. Fast, extremely aggressive. The slow ones look comedic in comparison.

*Not technically zombies, but close enough.

Slow zombies.

Fast ones don't make sense.

I like them, too. I don't mind the slow zombies, but they just don't have the "Oh [censored]! Oh [censored]! Oh [censored]!" feeling when they're chasing you, which is tense and (IMO) scarier.

I asked a friend about zombies and he said that the fast ones are riciculous. I asked why and he said that the slow ones are scarier because the older movies were scarier. He refused to understand that I was asking about the zombies, not the setting. Perhaps if fast zombies had been in the 'original' zombie movies, people would see them differently?

The ones that don't attempt to deconstruct the typical zombie archetype. That said, I don't like zombies in general, so I prefer the invisible ones.

I like mine lightly seared by a flamethrower, with just a hint of napalm. :D

I like my zombies undead and shambling. whether they gain some intelligence or are completely mindless really doesn't matter to me but I much prefer creepy slow zombies to their not really dead running counterparts. Usually doesn't even require head shots to take down a rage-zombie.

I think the reason why I like undead zombies (and zombies in general since they are my favorite horror creation) because I was only about 8 years old when I saw the 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead which scared the bajeezus out of me. Not to mention around the same time RE2 was popular (also my favorite RE game). Both the movie and game had a lasting effect on my interest in shambling human corpses.

I need them to be like those redeads from the Zelda games in order for them to instill fear in me. I don't mind regular zombies, but there's nothing inherently scary about them.

I like my zombies dead.

Thoroughly dead, not coming after me if I turn my back to them.

But if they must be "alive"... Hmm. I prefer them powerful and hard to kill. If I blow its legs up, I expect it to crawl towards me on its hands. If I blow its head off though, it should stop them.

Right, slow moving corpse makes perfect sense. :D

I like them fast as well, nothing interesting in a slow moving zombie if he can't catch you. Intelligence adds to the horror because they'll think of better ways to pass the obstacle people make to bar them away, such as doors, furniture, high walls etc. Then again not too intelligent; zombie with an IQ of 100 that can speak and uses a rifle against humans isn't scary at all, though that kind of a setting would be interesting as hell to watch I think.

Medium rare.

I like a bit of both, but I favor slower ones. I find that they make situations more intense and dramatic, despite their speed. However, I find faster ones more so fit for the 'infected' setting, as they're technically just sick (in the worst way possible) so I find it that they're still capable of moving as if they normal, if that makes any sense.
