I figured this would be an interesting thread.

Generally I black out, then when I wake up I find a note tacked to the door from my alter-ego telling me that I've kidnapped all the people I love and if I don't accomplish that which needs to be done by noon the following day, they will all die in a horrible circus accident.

... but sometimes I just tell myself I need to do something and start doing it, making calendar notes and whatnot.

By just doing it and not accepting "I don't feel like it" as an appropriate reason not to (damn me always giving me backtalk, got the belt out now I don't give myself no more grief)

Also vodka/rum helps when doing very very boring data entry type projects... not something I'd recommend using regularly though

Also just reminding myself I need to do the small stuff to get to my long term goal and whatnot

If there is something I don't want to do, it's usually because when I try to do it, I feel anxious. I usually try to exorcise, eat, and drink some hot tea to attain some sort of physical/mental contentment state so it doesn't feel like I'm dying when I do the subject in question.

Mostly this

Death is quite the motivator though.. I always had the feeling that I would die young (as a lot of people do), so that motivates me to get things done.

I'm a master demotivator. I'll get hungry for a snack, walk to the pantry, and 5 minutes of debating later leave empty handed and convinced I was never really hungry in the first place anyways.

I pretty much have to demotivate myself from playing video games in order to do homework. I mean, it's not like losing at SSFIV is fun anyways, guess I'll do homework instead.

That's funny. I often have the same feeling, too, but it has the opposite effect on me. :P

I've found I have a very hard time to motivate myself to do anything if no one is relying on me to do it or is expecting me to do it. My motivation comes from improving the lives of others through the effort I put into my actions.

Oh, this is true for me, too. So, Motivation = Stay Hungry + Help Others. For me, obviously.

I force myself to do it if I'm feeling lazy. Going to basic in June, I've been trying to push myself to do with a little more exercise each day/few days/etc. I try and push the limit by just as much so I can be stronger and such for basic.

The easiest way I have is to think of the reward or what happens when I'm done with the task.

If it's something I really dont want to do, and which I don't really get a reward from, I find a reward and think of that. Name something time consuming that most people dislike, and I bet I could think of a good way to look at it.

So really, by staying positive? Even if you don't want to do something, if you hate it and resist the whole way through, it's 1000x harder than if you just go with it and think of the good.
