So...how do you set up Version Control on a web server?

Post » Fri Nov 16, 2012 9:36 pm

I am trying to get the group project streamlined by setting up a server with the version control stuff we need.

I have no idea what I'm doing.

Assistance?

It SHOULD just be a change in the paths that you posted yesterday, Ducey.

http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1393521-version-control-problem/

You didn't answer my question on whether it has to be a share inside the Steam Directory, though ... Assuming it does not, then some form of internet-pathing should work. However, remember that WRITE permissions will be needed, and maybe some CREATE permissions as well ... so you'll need enough control over the webserver to make that happen and you'll need to be careful that you don't leave your webserver vunerable.

I would see if any of the teams out there are using VC (the Dark Creations lot may be able to help) and see how they have set it up and are using it.

I didn't realize an ini file was capable of internet pathing. How does that work?

I don't think the share has to be within the steam directory, but I haven't tried it any other way. The SureAI tutorial would indicate that it does not.

A valid path is a valid path ... What I don't know is whether the VC system will accept http:// and/or ftp:// ...

This is (sometimes) called WebDAV ... check it out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WebDAV

(but, like I said, I would PM a member of one of the bigger teams who post on these boards to see what they are doing ... )

Yeah, I've been talking with Maefgaer. He basically just handles all of MERP by himself, something I don't look forward to doing myself.

I've been looking into things like WerbDAV and things that let me make an artificial LAN. We'll see how that works out.

Yeah, from what I've read those who are using it seem to be using it like a "merge" tool, with one main person doing the "server-to-client" side of things. The system should work in a client-server environment (whether local LAN or Internet) ... but when I have read up on it, it appears some of what the Beth Devs used is not part of what we can use ... So you might struggle to get it to work (at all)

I'll stick it on my list of stuff to look at, as well, Ducey ... If I figure anything out I'll let you know ... Please post if you get any further

cheers :)

Ducey, I finish work at 18:00 today (English time...you do the math!). We're quite quiet so rather then just sitting here being bored out of my skull, I'll start doing a bit of research into the matter. Then when I get home, I'll figure out gettin VC set up on my pc.

I do hope we can get this sorted properly, it will make our lives soooo much easier
