So I found this cave called Hrothmund's Barrow. Being the adventurer I am, I went inside to find it to be, as the name suggests, a barrow. Completely empty until I came upon the main hall. It was completely flooded until I managed to get someway in until it went down to reveal a path. At the end of the hall was just a battle axe in a red marking covered stone.

Does anyone know what purpose this serves?

Erm it was in Bloodmoon... there it was related to the mead hall of Thirsk.

It's quest-related, and yes, the axe is there for a reason (and no, you can't take it with you).

I take it it no longer asks a question before you try to enter then?

It is no longer password protected.

What quest is that? If it is related to the Thirsk Meadhall quests then I'm stumped.

I think a lot of it depends on choices you make in the questline.

Then I must have made the wrong choice because nothing happens.
