Hunter and Ranger Roleplay. Thread for innovative ideas.

I finally made a hunter type character who has a geas or gesh, which is from Celtic folklore, a sort of compulsion, that says she can't enter any man made building. So I have found a few good places to go for tanning, smithing and what not.
So let's share tips on this roleplay for PC and console players.

Just have a few things looking for info on (PC)....

I don't have any mods really relevant to hunters but wondering if there even are any.

Any cool places people have found that have sleeping, possibly storage, tanning, upgrading either all together or close together?

What kind of activities do people do?

What is your general strategy? For instance, do you focus on smithing a lot at first to get some quick levels and upgrade equipment, or avoid smithing and training, or what stone do you use?

So above are discussion topics I am looking for info on, and below is some info on what mine is doing for any fellow hunters interested.

Of course a great place she has found to hang out is the Alchemist Shack. She used hides to go ahead and increase her smithing straight away and I found it much easier once she got up a few levels and upgrade her bow and axe. But she ranges around quite a bit.

She is doing the Kyne's quest, and just found the forgemaster's fingers so she can go to the Orc strongholds to trade since you can do that without entering a building. She also goes to smaller towns just to use the smithing equipment, but no walled cities. She also doesn't much like bandits so she wipes out the ones she finds outside like at forts and bilegulch mine. That is basically what she is up to. What is your hunter/ranger up to?

Currently, I'm roleplaying an nord empire soldier. He Hasnt signed up yet however, so he hunts game and mudcrabs at the river near Whiterun, and slowly travels further if he had no life threatening trouble the previous day.

He also cleans fur and armor and fishes in his undies.

My hunter lives in Riverwood at Hod and Gerdur's house, at least that’s where his stuff is stashed in a chest. He and Faendal pretty much just run around off the roads and hunt. They pick up the odd bounty for kicks. Khajiit caravans are great for trading. It’s simple but a lot of fun. The best thing is no compulsion to loot, as he doesn’t really need money. Finding enough arrows might be a problem for your hunter, though.

My strategy is play and have fun. I don’t do quick levels and such.

Well, I am not having problems with arrows because, in my mind, Kyne hates bandits so my hunter also hunts bandits, at least the ones that are outside. Since she can't go inside, except for Froki's hut since, Kyne gave her that geas, and made an exception for her to do the Froki's quest, which is pretty cool for any hunter.

It was weird she met a dog right off the bat and that dog saved her a bunch. I highly suggest any hunter get a dog follower if you can and also do that Kyne's quest.

I am just curious about how people are building their hunters and the perk progression. I finally figured out how to make dual wielding work, by simply not hot keying melee weapons and just equipping them both. Then when she wants to switch to melee she just unequips her bow and it automatically switches to both melee weapons. Since you can't ever equip a spell and use that technique she just never uses any and has home made healing potions hot-keyed.

Never touch magic is what I make sure of. It keeps the immersion up and fits my character. Also, carrying only 45 arrows or below is realistic and helps you manage your arrow count. Oh and cleaning pelts and fur is very game immensing.

I just started a Bosmer hunter/pure archer, and have followed just about the exact path of the OP - Alchemist's Shack (though I only stayed there for 1 night) and Kyne's quest. Currently on his way back to Froki's shack; around level 7 or so I think.

I planned this character to be a basic hunter, probably kill bandits and wildlife... and I also wanted him to become a werewolf (though that would involve a little bit of contact with society). Skills are Archery, Alchemy, Sneak, and a little Smithing and Light Armor. Trying to avoid melee combat entirely and rely solely on the bow, but I do have a dagger or two in case I need it. Other than that, the idea is that Beast Form would be used for melee.

But I've found myself feeling a little adrift with this character, actually. I left him be and played with some other characters in the meantime, but I do plan to go back to him... I'm just learning that hunting random animals and random bandits isn't quite enough to keep me hooked, I guess. I think I need more of a goal... and more of a home location too.

I will be making a Ranger soon. Either a Nord or Bosmer.
He will be a hunter and explorer / cartographer.
Some mods I have: Simple Fletching, Fur Hoods HD, Portable Campsite.

Still waiting for a particular survival mod to be finished.

Yeah I was worried about that so waited until now to do it when I kept obsessing over a hunter while playing another character. Now that she has finished Kyne's quest I am going around getting rid of some of the stuff I found. One thing you might do is head to Meeko's shack and get him or some dog follower. Oh, and another thing I find helpful is to not be concerned about using fast travel when I want. It might alleviate some of the boredom and helps manage inventory a lot better and get tasks done faster if you still want to be more task and goal oriented.

Kind of aside but I just took the Moon Amulet quest from Khajaro or whatever that khaj guard's name is, so now I can always find that caravan by putting that quest active.

Mythris thanks for the mod tips. I will have to look into those, though it is a bit of pain for me to get mods because my PC is not on net.

Oh! I really like this idea!! How cool to be under a geas that you cannot enter a man made structure... would that include Dwemer structures too? Has she been to Blackreach?

There's a Dwemer ruin in the far north with a small shack nearby that has a few sleeping mats in it. Rather inhospitable part of the world though - wonder if any modders have done a "build campfire" mod yet?!

I've been playing an Altmer who went to Skyrim to study magic, but ended up enjoying roaming and archery more, so she keeps getting funding from her family but is actually having a high old time learning archery and two-handed! Think she needs to spend a bit more time outdoors, hunting, shooting and fishing...

Although she really has something against people killing the foxes - and will always seek to kill them too! And the deer..... hmmm....maybe she'll be a vegetarian hunter?!

Good thread - given me some food for thought.

Yeah it is a big effect on her because she basically can't do the main quest or many others. I ended up giving her a pass on Froki's quest because it is a must do for hunters. I like the idea of 'manmade' being literal and not applying to dwemer, but it is really 'man or mer made' (puh rum pa). So she hasn't been in any Dwemer ruins, Blackreach, forts, Jorrvaskyr or stores.

In fact I am considering pretending she 'found' a Skyforge Steel War Axe thru the console because I am sure that soon her regular steel axe isn't going to 'cut it'. Eventually she may even pick up a little enchanting once she 'discovers' and kills the hagravens at pinnacle rock. That would be too cool to do enchanting even though she has the geas.

As far as your altmer, it isn't to outlandish for her to be vegetarian lots of woodsy granola types present day are veggies.... Oh yeah, and my hunter has quit killing foxes too. They are too cute and fluffy and she considers them totem animals.
