Hyped games that failed

Post » Tue Jan 15, 2013 12:24 pm

I did a search and found no existing thread. Might have used the wrong tags of course. Anyway:

Tell me about games that was extremely hyped - be it by the community or only by yourself - that failed. Please motivate why as well.

*Diablo 3: Seeing the old gameplay videos back in 2008 I was really looking forward to this game. Now I've like 200h gameplay and haven't played since August. There were so many things that failed.
*Duke Nukem Forever: I really longed for this game for over 10 years, and when it finally finished - it svcked. All about porm and no guns, well there were guns but I couldn't have them all at the same time!
*RE6: I was really hyped about this, having a modern RE where we could aim and walk normally. I figured a Dead Space-like shooter with tons of horror and suspense. All I got was these stupid QTEs and nice custcenes. Nice -if I wanted to watch a movie.

Spore, obviously. It was alright for what it was, but it wasn't what it was supposed to be. Even remotely. Instead of a science based game, we got cartoony space adventures. It's also the single most pirated game in history.

Too Human. Thank God I never played it.

I don't think anyone was expecting much from RE6. Everyone knew that it wasn't going to be a horror game as soon as the trailers came out.

Diablo 3 had its flaws, but if a game can entertain you for 200 hours and still be a failure in your mind, you've set the bar rather high.

Hmm, let's see...

Skyrim: Expected too much, so I was let down.
Saint's Row 3: Too over the top, filled with silly six jokes and explosions. Less depth than the previous installments. Overly silly.
Darkness 2: I wanted it to be like the first one, but sadly it wasn't. They changed too much.

These are my opinions, so I don't necessarily expect people to agree with them. Also, the games weren't bad, but they were a let down.

Failed fan expectations, or failed critically/financially? Diablo III was extremely successful in the latter two.

Personally, L.A. Noire is a bit of a let-down. Great writing, graphics, and art direction, but I think it would have been better off as a television series or something. I don't feel like I'm playing a game.

This. Seriously look at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8dvMDFOFnA. Imagine how awesome Spore would have been if it became that.

Neither have I. It actually made me go back to Morrowind and Oblivion.

Failed from my viewpoint, or failed from a public viewpoint?

Eh?

About 40 story missions, varied and of decent length, two great big islands, loads of side stuff, hunting, crafting, outpost liberation, etc.

It's a shooter, how could you have been disappointed with the lack of content? Aaaaaand the shooting and stealth mechanics were excellent; on par with any linear shooter.

Skyrim comes to mind, but the game isn't finished yet, so it still has a chance to redeem itself in some aspects.

I think Halo 4 was overhyped quite a bit, and failed to impress in several aspects, but nowhere near as bad as Medal of Honor:Warfighter. That takes the cake for 2012, I think.

Same. I tried playing it again recently and when the one track from morrowind came on I just thought to myself "Why am I not playing morrowind?"

I guess I overshot my expectations? I did enjoy it a lot though, I just though there would be more meat and I had everything I needed fairly quickly. The missions were very fun though and some of the side missions were nice also.

Edit: it's probaly because I play more RPG like games.

Haha, I get that quite a bit too. That music gets me all nostalgic for it and I want to play Morrowind. It's even better because the majority of Skyrim players haven't even played Morrowind, so they get to listen to some awesome Morrowind OST and not even realize it's recycled.

If it had been a standalone game with absolutely no connection to DAO, then I might have enjoyed it. Maybe.

*Diablo 3

I think fan boys are just giving that game too much negative attention. Game's not the best thing ever, but it's still a very good game. It's kinda like every Final Fantasy that gets released. 1st every game after VII were crap, then "it went downhill" after X, and atm 13 is the worst thing SE released. Looking forward to laugh at people who'll claim how XIII was the last good released title while claiming how XV is where they started to go bad.

Congratulations OP. You made the perfect thread for Skyrim to be ravaged to death, let the slaughter commence...

Anyway, i'll balance it out by saying i thought Skyrim was a GOOD Elder Scrolls game. Maybe not a great one, but a good, fun game nonetheless. After 200 hours who am i to complain?

And you know it's just Bethesda trying desperately to get its original fanbase to come back. Just look at the Dragonborn DLC.

Morrowind might have horrible graphics (even by 2002 standards) and horrible combat (a hallmark of TES, anyway), but it had tons of heart and nostalgia to it. Besides, mods fix everything. :D I wish that Bethesda liked Morrowind enough to bring back the heart and nostalgia.

To me, Skyrim was like buying a bag of 250 pistachios, and only about 35 weren't empty. They were all at the bottom too, so I had to dig through the empty ones.
