Idiots Question (about .FOMOD files)

Post » Wed Feb 09, 2011 7:35 pm

Hi,

I know that I will stand exposed to the world as an idiot for asking this  , but how exactly - using FOMM - do you install mods which only contain a .FOMOD file? That is, do you select 'Add FOMod', 'Create FOMod', 'Create from Folder', 'Add PFP', etc. For example, the Desert Succubus Core mod contains only one file - ie, 'Shiloh DS - DS-CORE 1.02 Beta.fomod' - and when I selected it with 'Add FOMod', it said 'file name/extension not recognised' (or something like that), etc. Should I extract it into a separate folder, leave it as it is, or something else.

Also, in a related question, what should I do with mods that contain both .ESP files and .FOMOD files? Like, for instance, the Centred Third Person Camera mod, which in its Read Me file says:

"MANUAL INSTALLATION

1. Place the esp files in your Fallout New Vegas data directory.
2. From the launcher, go to Data Files and select the esp that you wish to use.
3. Enjoy!

MOD MANAGER INSTALLATION
1. Place the .fomod files in your Mods folder.
2. Activate the mod that you wish to use through the mod manager's Package Manger
3. Enjoy!"

But I'm still not entirely sure what this means with regards the 'Mod Manger' option - by using 'Add FOMod' , which means it has to be a compressed format? Or by putting the .FOMOD file in a separate folder of its own? Etc etc.

Any help or advice would be appreciated,

Thanks,
DANNY

There should be a folder called "mods" created by FOMM.

With the newest version you have to specify it's location, with earlier versions it was placed in the New Vegas game folder.

FOMOD files are just placed in there and should then appear in the Package Manager list to be activated.

Easy shortcut, though, is to simply double-click the FOMOD file. If FOMM is installed properly and has the extension registered properly, it should automatically open the Package Manager and ask if you want to move the file to "mods" folder or copy it there.

For your second question, use either the manual install (esps/esms/resources) or the FOMOD, but not both.

Hi Showler,

When you say "FOMOD files are just placed in there", presumably you mean you have to place them manually yourself?

Unfortunately, whenever I double-click on a FOMOD file I always get the message - "Error loading XXXXX. Extension 'fomod' is not a supported archive file name extension". This a bit peculiar, as the extension appears to have been registered properly (with FOMM). That is, all my FOMOD files when you look at them are associated with the Fallout Mod Manager Archive - have the correct icon, name, etc. Also, when I installed FOMM I selected ALL the options to associate BSA, ESM, ESP, FOMOD, etc files with FOMM. Any idea why this does not appear to be working properly?

Regards,
DANNY

Try running FOMM as an administrator and try setting the associations in the "settings" panel again.

edit: If that doesn't work, check if you have the newest version of FOMM.

Yes, all the 'File Type Associations' have been selected in FOMM (under "settings), and I have the latest version of FOMM. I am using Windows XP Home. But FOMM crashes when I use the "Run As" option.

Go into FOMM, open settings, switch to Fallout: New Vegas tab and check what the "mods" directory is set for.

Try dropping the FOMOD file directly in that folder, Then check the Package Manager.

I havent tried using FOMODS in NV but in FO3 I always had a hell of a time getting them to show up in FOMM. I found it easier to open them in 7zip and extract them like a normal zip file.
