Idustry self-destruction due to how the new games are being

Post » Sat Jul 28, 2012 7:33 am

Ok this thread IS NOT ABOUT DAWNGUARD! As proof I submit the following: This thread is to discuss wether or not the gaming industry will self destruct for various reasons such as : low quality products, short game length, damaging changes to a already good series, launch day dlc that wasnt dlc at first and why these reason are in valid as causality for industry self distruct.

If this isn't about Dawnguard, then it doesn't belong in the Dawnguard forum. I'll move it.

Gaming industry won't self destruct, just the bad companies when people learn to stop supporting them... which won't be for a very long while. Simple as that I think.

In my opinion? Yes.

The triple A industry pumps so much money into a game they have to make sure it will sell....to make sure it sells they copy something that already sells well, and avoid many original game elements to stop the risk getting too high. This means that apart from a few the really big companies like Blizzard or Valve.... innovation doesn't happen. And the moment something new does sell well, all the other companies immediately copy that idea, as now it is prove and not risky. Look at it this way, Skyrim suprised the industry at how well it sold...in the next few years look how the industry suddenly will pump out open-world sandbox games galore and RPGs all of a sudden.

Its actually this reason that the indie industry is thriving, indie games are all about trying something new and standing out. Of course there are the copy-cat indie devs, but they don't tend to do as well as people that actually make unique games. And it makes you wonder, a studio pumps millions of dollars into a third person chest high wall shoot-a-thon and then that game gets outsold by some guy making an indie game in his shed......really makes you wonder what this industry will amount to.

I think you are wrong on all counts. I see the gaming industry continue to boom. Multiplayer and DLC make up for short stories, game development continues to improve, as it always has, the only solid case of damaging changes that I can think of is Fable and it still did really well later on in the series. Hell the only problem with gaming is cost of development which is putting the startups out of business (rip Big Huge) an givig the power to the few larger companies, this however is offset with the advent of "Arcade" and indie gaming.

I whole heartedly agree when innovation leads way to cookie cutter design and story style and length the industry will die.

While I've never played the Diablo Series, 3.5+ million in 24 hours means no, there won't be. The consumer has the power but the consumer continues to consume, giving the power to the developer.
