Reading this whole list has temporarily lowered my intelligence by 2. I really don't get why they even made this. Is Kindgom hearts even an RPG? I haven't played it in years but I thought it was an action-RPG that had minor RPG elements. So, yeah, like some said before, I'm putting my money on them just pulling these name's out of a hat, except for the last few.

How To: Make a Top 100 RPGs of All Time list
  • Take last year's/decade's Top 100 list (if you didn't make one, shame on you. Steal someone else's)
  • Remove one random entry per year (make sure not to remove staple classics to remain somewhat credible)
  • Add one popular RPG from each year since last list, preferably according to Metacritic scores or copies sold
  • If no popular RPG exists for a given year, add two from another, or add a game with mild RPG elements and call it an RPG
  • Profit from ad revenue generated by fans who are only viewing the list to complain about it

Your Pokemans level up and you can teach them new moves. I'd say it's an RPG. You have a lot of choice in how to approach battles, what team to form, what moves they know, how they're raised, etc. A strategic turn-based roleplaying game.

This. "Top 100" lists, in any field/genre, are typically junk.

..and yes, pretty much all of those games have been called RPGs. By someone. (I mean, heck - if a total action-fest like the Souls games, and FPS's like System Shock and Deus Ex can be RPGs, any of those other things can. Heck, if no-actual-roleplaying-at-all lootfests like the Diablo games can be called RPGs..... etc, etc, etc)

Oh yeah and as someone who is currently replaying Red, well FireRed, I have to say pretty happy it got that high. I'm not entierly sure it should be there compared to some other games but oh well! Nice to see it there

Also are my eyes really tired or is Kotor not on the list? I really enjoyed that... thought it deserved to be on the list. Edit: Also Mass Effect 2 is on there but is Mass Effect the original, a game far better in my opinion. Urg, eyestrain looking on that list. But it is IGN after all and they probably just put 100 rpg names in a hat and pulled them out one by one to decide the order!

Oh right, thanks it's my eyes. Oh, I see, I was skimming and looking for K not S.

Edit: Hang on a tick, WoW is a MMO not an rpg. At least in the traditional sense...

That's like saying Dead Island is an RPG because you can raise your level and learn new moves. You have a lot of choice of how to approach a battle, what weapons to use, what moves you know, and how you pursue the game.

Also, turn based isnt a definer of an RPG, that's just strategy.

Being the seventh draw out of the hat is pretty lucky, actually.

Well in Pokemon your weapons are your individual Pokemon. They each have certain moves and as they develop in level they can learn new ones. It may have turn based combat but many rpg games have this. There is an exploration and travelling element also where you talk to NPC's and complete quests, or, tasks for a better word as you travel the world in your quest to become champion.

WRPG's got jobbed big time...but only if the list had any credibility. I think JRPG's should be judged on a separate scale. They have nothing to do with WRPG's. Todd Howard has said as much. Aside from actual story dynamics, customization, and gender choice, there could be hair spikiness, hair purpleness, and PC broodiness.

Turn based is an irrelevant feature. You can also explore and travel in many games and talk to NPCs to complete various quests. But ultimately, this is all filler content. Pokemon is more or less a grindfest with a lot of filler. I enjoy pokemon, but I'd certaintly never call it an RPG.

How could Dark Souls not be an RPG? Stats, character skill is important just like player skill. You need to think to win. Tactics apply, you play a role etc etc.

I think Dragons Dogma deserves a spot on that list. Probably in the latter parts like 80's and above but still a spot. The list is crap anyways. I don't think anyone thinks of Pokemon when they think of RPGs. Even though it is arguably an RPG. Sure it has RPG elements and all but so does CoD...

I can tolerate Fallout 3 being above NV, but 10? I really don't see how anybody could call it the 10th greatest RPG of all time.

Why do I care about this list again?

Skyrim got jobbed big time.

You. I don't understand you. Star struck and filled with fanlove? Incredibly sarcastic? We'll never know.
