[REQ] Immersive Book Leveling

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 11:33 am

For those that want to encourage themselves to get into the lore and literature in Skyrim I propose a mod that delays the leveling up on books by the numbers of pages contained therein.

I sometimes have the tendency to open a book to see if I level up, and if I don't I put it away to read another time. Even sometimes I open a book and level up then close it without even reading it!

Imagine being deep in a cave and coming across and old book on fighting and taking the time to read its pages by torchlight and a few pages into it you get notification your character has leveled up in two-handed weapons? Not only have you leveled your character you have also read more information on the world of Tamriel.

This mod, however small in it's footprint in the overall scheme of Skyrim, would really add credibility and investment to the literary world of Skyrim.

I too have always thought it was a little weird that you gained your skill increase for just opening the books front cover and not actually reading it.

While I applaud the idea, I'm pretty sure what would generally happen is that most people would, upon opening any book, simply spam right mouse to tab through quickly, feeling slightly irritated at the imposition as they do so. People who wish to read every book already have that option.

A genuinely useful change which I can't imagine anyone objecting to would be a prompt when you open a skillbook asking if you wanted to learn it now, or save it for later. That way you could still read the book, but save the free skillpoint for a point in the game when levelling times for skills become huge - or simply use it immediately as you prefer.

The ideal mod for books which grant skill increase is to have the increase be bound to a key/action. Open and read the book all you want -- get the skill increase when you want it. My assumption is that the skill increase happens immediately upon finding the book so that you don't unintentionally pass over a book with a skill increase and so that these books cannot be hoarded for later levels.

This at least would avoid you gaining an advancement in a skill you don't want to improve just because you have take a book from the world space instead taking it from an inventory.
