"Immortal" NPC's are a problem...

Post » Wed Jun 06, 2012 5:23 pm

Okay so, am I the only one getting annoyed with these npc's that cannot be killed at all? for example, I'm inside the thieves guild after getting chased inside by guards ( I don't think they should even be able to enter this area. ) but there's this one guy which I'm guessing has to do with a quest or something but... he can't be killed at all, its frustrating that every few seconds the guy gets back up and starts fighting again. I cant even talk to the people in the guild because they constantly attack him. I've tried everything i can think of. I've tried, leaving the area and coming back, using a fear spell on him, and simply hitting him until he leaves or something. but no, he's still in there constantly fighting which is causing me not to be able to do any of the quests for the guild. so what I'm proposing is that "immortal" npc's that don't have anything to do with the main story quests can be killed, or they at least flee the area. ( I would've reloaded the save but my last hard save was about four hours ago and i've turned off autosaving so my save file doesnt get any bigger and cause even more lag than the game already has.)

I too have had problems with those npcs. They're a real pain in the butt when they're hostile to you in an area where you're trying to battle a dragon at the same time. Wouldn't be so bad if the dragon would fixate on them, but no it usually makes me take them both on at the same time.

Yeah it svcks. I sometimes like to go on killing sprees and wipe out an entire town, ...
Me too :) That's one of the things I love about Elder Scrolls. Usually the ultimate personal quest of any of my evil characters is to be the sole survivor of the land. ;)

The particular npc that I was posting about was an Empire officer at one of their camps I tried to wipe out.

It seems like half the population is immortal. It annoys me how Bethesda implements excessive hand holding to "help" noobs.

I'm kind of disappointed in how many immortal NPCs there are. I'd prefer they find more clever ways around killing NPCs important to the main quest and just have you fail side quests if you kill those NPCs. I loved how in Fallout: New Vegas they let you kill almost every character apart from Yes Man who was needed if you wanted to complete the game.

Fast Travel to Whiterun
Sleep at your house for 3 in game days, not 1 hour less.

Go back to Riften. He shouldn't be there anymore.

-And yes, immortal NPCs svck, and I totally agree we should be able to kill anyone not connected to the MAIN Dragonborn quest line.

I also dislike this. I always love the option to kill anyone, even if it means failing one or more quests. The only problem is when people die by accident or glitch. That can screw you over.

That shouldn't be a problem. The game knows if its it the player that make the killing blow, followers are the best example of that, immortal unless YOU kill them.

You'd have to attack the person to kill them, nothing else could do it.

If Bethesda allowed everyone to be killed, then we'd be getting thousands of "My game is broken" threads every day. As opposed to hundreds....

First find out the npc`s ref id (should be 5 random numbers/letters) by opening the console (~) while looking at the npc. Then travel to the place you want to move them to (can be anywhere) and use this console command.

(5 digit ref id from above).moveto player

They should teleport you and will not be in the thieves guild anymore

Nope. I would welcome a thousand more complaint threads if it meant I could kill certain NPCs.

In Morrowind didn't an alert pop up telling you that you had just altered the main quest? I don't see why they couldn't implement something like this, letting the player know that their quest-experience would be changed as a result of their actions.

Yeah, it's a bit aggravating. I don't see why they couldn't have done like they did in Morrowind: if you kill off a character that's necessary for the main quest, there's a 'back-door' way to complete the game. Ridiculously hard, of course, and difficult to find if you don't know what to look for, but still there.

Most people are stupid. They will kill important people, then complain in the forums how they can't finish the game.

followers are not immportal, they can be killed by enemys (it is just harder since they will not aggro them [as much] when they are down)

Hmm. This thread's made me realize that I haven't run into a single case of this yet. Guess I haven't tried the right things.

Followers are only immortal to common enemies; they tangle with a giant or mammoth or any other boss type enemy and they are sunk -- though, I do believe they just respawn at your house -- atleast in the case of Lydia.

This. I have had companions get killed when yielding because they were in the crossfire of an archer or mage after me or a different companion. But, it still IS possible to set it so only you can kill them.

I usually don't mind essential npcs since I'm a completionist and don't want to miss out on quests, but it's annoying when they abuse their immortality in battle. Essential Npcs should stop fighting and run away if they are knocked out, that would stop you from having to see them kill dragons or wipe out small armies singlehandedly.

I will add, I'd love to kill the jarl of Whiterun and take it over for myself; I don't know if he's important to the story past sending you to Hrothgar, but still, all the same.

Fallout New Vegas allowed the player to kill nearly anyone he/she wished and it was never a problem. Let the player have the freedom of choice to kill any advlt he/she wishes and if the NPC kill is vital to a quest that quest just auto-fails on the spot.
