Improving the favorites system. (Xbox 360 + PS3)

Post » Thu Jun 21, 2012 1:35 pm

So as of now, you press the down/up directional button (xbox) and get a list of alphabetised favorites. You also get two hot keys, if you hot key a 1h weapon it will go to your right hand, and left hand for a spell hot key.

I would have liked to see a favorites menu in the menu (magic items etc) as well, allowing you to organise the favorites menu in game. You could put any spell/weapon in any order you wanted, and have small folders to group spells/weapons/potions, keeping the size down.

Also change the number of hot keys you can have, make the down directional button the favorite menu, and the up button another hot key. Then have LB and RB (xbox) to scroll up and down (only when in the menu itself, otherwise they will function as normal). Just an idea, I'm sure there is a way to make even more hot keys out of the controllers.

The big thing though, would being able to set a favorite for an entire outfit and weapons set, so you could hot key full steel plate armor, a necklace+ring and a steel warhammer for example, and they are all equipped when you click that favorite. Not hard to implement, but it would be so useful for me. What do you think?

I think the system we currently have is good enough. Only make favourite the spells and weapons which yu actually want to use regularly. Remove them very once in a while if you don't use them.

Far easier than the limited hotkeys of Oblivion. Or trying to hit the right hotkey slot with a four directional d-pad.

It's okay as of now, but don't you think it would be better with what I explained above? It would help keep me out of the favorites menu, and in the game.

Yeah hitting a Clannfear with open lock happened to me more than once.

Simplest improvement : hotkey equips a pair of hands instead of one item (unless of course you switch from claymore to bow, when it's a moot point).

If it's to be improved, it should be improved for all platforms, PC included. Modders already fixed this (Categorized Favorites Menu), it's basically what you're asking for - instead of one list, a screen appears with lists and sublists (Magic, Shouts, Apparel, Potions etc.). It's customizable and allows to hotkey sets of equipment.

That's how the Favorites menu should have looked all along. As it is now, tagging more than 10 items as favorites makes the list unnavigable; it's actually easier to open the inventory and search manually.

Yeah they would have to change it on PC as well, but it's the consoles that have the problem, you have mods.

Yeah that would be better than what it is now, but it's not exactly hard to implement what I said above.

What you're proposing though would remove the Shout/Ability button.

You can already favourite/unfavourite spells in the magic menu. I don't see a need for more than that to be honest.

No it wouldn't, only when in the favorite menu would LB and RB move up and down, when in game they are used as normal. Didn't explain it very well above.

I just gave the mod as an example of what the menu should look like. But this is a major issue - what's the point of having a quick-access menu if it's quicker to search manually in your inventory? This should definitely be improved.

Why swap Up/Down on the Stick and D-Pad for LB/RB though? I fail to see how that is more intuitive.

Down will always bring up the favorite menu, but you would then get another hot key for up, just a way of adding a hot key.

Agree completely, I doubt it's a priority for Bethesda though.

This
When my dual-wielder equips her right hand weapon usually her favourite left hand weapon is auto-equipped but every now and then I forget that I recently had a heal spell or a torch in my left hand and that gets equipped instead. Very inconvenient when that bandit chief will one shot me if I don't dual-wield power attack and stagger him first.

This is my main problem, with 2h I manage fine, I hot key my 2h weapon and keep the two spells before it. So when I unequip the 2h weapon, I get the spells. Dual wielding hot keys is just a mess, especially since the weapon will always go to the right hand.
