I can run Oblivion maxed out with AA with lots of FPS to spare.
I can run SC2 at 35 FPS at max.
I can run BF3 all ultra (with the exception of high shadows, no SSAO, and no AA) with 25 FPS.

Yet when I run Skyrim at the LOWEST POSSIBLE settings, I can barely get over 10 FPS.

I have the 285.62 WHQL drivers from Nvidia.
I've defragged the game.
I've verified the cache on steam.
I've tried disabling v-sync.

Does anyone have any suggestions at all?

Sigh. I'm getting worried about installing it when I get my copy.

Ugh, tried to change pre-rendered frames as well, no success.

Gonna try to change the .ini file with the shadows, maybe it's there.

I am having the same issues and it is rather frustrating because my computer is not bad:
- Intel? Core? i7 2670QM 2.2GHz
- 8GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 1600MHz
- 1.5GB GDDR5 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M

I put the settings to low and still only got around 10 fps...

Hmm, I think it may have to do with us having mobile GPUs...

While I don't encounter low performance all the time, I do get FPS drops from 60 to low 30ies often enough. It also happens when casting the "Ward" spell.
Also, sometimes when I load into an area I only have 5 FPS until I leave and enter the area again.

The game recommended the 'high' settings for me, which is what I'm using. Played around with AA - I get zero difference in FPS between 16xAA and AA off, same goes for anisotropic filtering. The only thing affecting FPS for me is draw distance of objects.
Running the game on 1920x1080, also tried 1680x1050 - zero FPS difference there.

I'ts not game-breaking by a long shot, but irritating because it's noticeable and especially annoying when it happens during combat.

That's really weird. Perhaps the driver is having issues with some chipsets?

I wonder because your machines smoke mine and I'm getting good frame rates on high.

Also, I hardly reboot this machine. The first time I tried to load up the game I suddenly dropped during the attack to 1-2 frames per second and never recovered. A reboot fixed whatever broke in the background and I haven't had a problem since.

It's probably something to do with the fact that we have a GTX 400m and 500m series.

Maybe the game isn't recognizing those, and it's switching to the integrated graphics instead...

My laptop also has the fps problems.
my laptop is not as strong as some of yours, but It had no problem making witcher 2 look beautiful.

The only way for me to play skyrim is to play it in the lowest settings possible, and then it still doesn't run smooth.

and indeed many laptop users seem to have fps problems.

The people with the bad ass laptop should try to turn AA and shadows to lowest possible, that greatly increases fps rate, sadly that wasn't enough to make my skyrim really playable.

It saddens me to hear that laptop performance is generally poor. But anyways since you mostly have nvidia cards I would like to ask to anyone who has a hp laptop with a 6770m card how the game runs. Laggy or playable? Thanks in advance.

P.S - and lets just hope that this is a driver issue that will be sorted out soon.

I have an all AMD setup (Athlon II X3 450), and Radeon 6870 1GB with 8gb ram - and I can run on very high, plus increasing all sliders to max. The only thing I reduced is the AA to 2x.
The game is extremely smooth and playable - runs better than oblivion.

Looks like some sort of Nvidia issue that people are expeiencing here.

My issue now is the "favorites" in inventory does not work for me...blah
