Indie games and the 'pay before final release' trend

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 10:25 pm

i don't mind it at all, provided that its cheap.

you mentioned minecraft, i think i paid 15 dollars. that's a 1/4 of what most good games cost these days, and its easily my favourite game of my life so far = worth it.

and i'd be willing to try others provided their in expensive as well.

I also said getting tired of/exhausted. I played MC for months everyday with other BGSFers.
So you did, my bad I must have, obviously, overlooked that

- But again there is a load of mods out there now that can completely change your experience, I'm sure there is a future update planned that will allow you to gain quests from the villagers that roam around just now. Everything is steeping up a notch with Notch out of the way.

Notch out of the way?
Deary me you've gone gone for a while :o
Yeah Notch stepped down as the lead developer for Minecraft months ago, leaving Jeb incharge - which has turned out to be a very productive decision. He's been fixing and implementing things Notch was too lazy to do (or couldn't).
They also employed a guy called Jon, whos been working closely with Jeb to invent and implement a new AI system for all the mobs - see the MC thread I just posted a short interview with him. He's made it so that zombie invasions now occur (they can break into homes with wooden doors) and they're AI has been upgraded with a better path finder.

Oooo, that is kind of good news. Once enough features are in, and once I finish this backlog of games, I'll start playing it again! :D

I wonder whether Fargo isn't stalling too much. The longer he waits post-Double Fine's success, the less momentum he'll have to capitalise on... I'd buy a Wasteland 2, FTR.

(I still need to give Schafer my money... Waiting until next month.)

It's all the consumer's choice. If we want to pay for an unfinished game, why should the developer not provide it?

I've considered doing this with http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JT3rD3JSFLc but it's still a bit too much. Looks awesome though.

Multiplayer games? Sure.
Singleplayer games? Never.

The Overgrowth project is fascinating. The amount of attention they're paying to details, the combat system and its fluid animations... Alpha release after alpha release for a long time, but still barely anything done with regards to an actual game with a story or logical progression. It's just spawning in a random open location in which you have to spawn the enemies yourself with the editor.

The weekly videos are usually pretty interesting to watch. The combat system is great and keeps getting better.
