Installing Skyrim with nearly no internet and no Steam

Post » Wed May 16, 2012 4:25 am

So my friend is in a bit of a predicament. He bought a hard copy of Skyrim yesterday however he has not been able to play any. The reason is that he uses a shared internet connection and the others in the house apparently went on a downloading spree and went over the monthly limit they had bought from their internet provider so while he still has the internet it only works at a snails pace and he could just as well wait until the next month as to try and install the game right now since Bethesda just had to have the game be a Steamworks game.

Anyway Steam gripes away, now I need to help him get both Steam and Skyrim, fair enough, I can take the SteamInstall.Msi with me on my tiny little 4GB flash drive. But the problem lies in the game itself. I'm not entirely sure about how to do that without internet connection.

So does anyone know how I can get both Steam and Skyrim up on a PC with nearly no internet connection ? (It is not possible to bring his PC over to my place BTW has to be done at his place with nearly no internet).

Should be able to just copy the folder of Skyrim across into his Steam directory to the games folder and the data from your 'My Games' folder. At least, that's how I did it for other games.
Good luck....

Oh, and yes, Steam can burn in the fires of Oblivion... I often find myself in your friends predicament.

You could try copying the Skyrim directory from [C:\Steam\Steamapps\Common] And dropping into the same folder on his computer. I don't know that it will recognize that as valid, but it's really your only shot.

wait until next month or move out/find a new place to live or pay more and change the plan. 11 day of the month and they are over limit?? Must be a real crappy plan.

Best, get into the router, change the pw and then disable/limit all the other computers connections and go away for the weekend.

You'll (He will) need an Internet connection. You not only need it for the activation, but for the required v1.1 patch which is several hundred MBs. If his ISP is like most he should have dial-up speeds which is just enough to download everything required and then place Steam into Offline Mode.

Thanks everyone for the advice. Will see if I can't copy my Skyrim folder for Steam into his steam folder once he has steam up.
