Interface Tips

So I got the game yesterday and it took me about 10 minutes to figure out how to use the interface. I've read reviews and posts all over from people that just cannot figure it out, because they are so used to clicking on things, or resorting to using arrow keys and enter, that they think this interface takes too much effort to navigate. That is really not the case. You can navigate every menu in this game without using the mouse, and without moving your left hand from its original position over WASD. I also noticed that the method for assigning spells, potions, weapons, etc. to number keys is rather easy, but unintuitive at first glance.

TAB = Open/Exit Menus

W & S = Navigate Up & Down

A & D = Navigate Left & Right

E = Confirm Selection, Equip/Un-Equip, Buy/Sell, Open Chests

F = Favorite An Item or Spell

Q = Open Favorites Menu

# Keys 1 - 8 = Assign item from favorites menu to selected number key (Just press the number key while highlighting the item you want to assign to it in your favorites menu and the number key you pressed will appear to its left)

When you've assigned a weapon to your main hand, any spells that you have as a favorite that have also been assigned to number keys will automatically assign the spell to your off-hand when the spell is equipped, leaving your equipped weapon in place. If you double tap a number key that has a spell assigned to it, you will now dual wield that spell. If you press a number key associated with a different spell after you have started to dual wield a spell, the spell you were dual wielding will stay equipped in your main hand, while the new spell you have selected will be assigned to your off-hand.

If you have a weapon assigned to a number key and your main hand, and you equip a spell, do not press the number key for your main hand weapon to remove the spell from your off-hand as it will not work. You will just un-equip your weapon and run around fist fighting.

I know people want to click stuff to their hearts content, but clicking is now slower than the method of menu navigation we've been given. Utilize it, as it is truly not bad at all.

Yes, this.

I discovered this after using the mouse for four hours. The interface is absolutely fantastic as long as you use ASDW, and confirm with E, and do not involve the mouse at all.

Bump so people can see this and stop raging at the 1 - 8 keys specifically.

If people would RTFM, they would grasp this instead of whining about how non-intuitive everything is. The one thing the manual doesn't mention is that double-tapping the assigned key lets you dual wield a spell. Thanks for that tip :)

If you're wielding a spell in your off hand and a one handed weapon in the main hand, is there an easy way to empty your off-hand so it becomes a fist? Because that's the only way you can block with 1 handed weapons.

So far the only way I've been able to do that is by equiping and then unequipping a shield or torch by pressing the hotkey for one of those twice. You can't unequip a spell that way because it'll make you dual wield the spell instead.

I've looked for methods to do it, but haven't found anything yet. The easiest way for me to do it was to map a shield to a number key and then equip/remove it with a double tap of the key. That specifically could use some work, unless I'm just missing something.

Stating that the game is broken would imply it's that way for everyone, when it's not. How does the D2D purchase work with this game? Are you still required to activate/download it on Steam? If not, there is a version 1.1 patch, does the D2D version need to be patched manually, and have you done that part already?

The problem is that a lot of people don't use WASD. I use ESDF because it gives me more buttons to work with with my pinky and ring finger. Among a few other things, I cannot pick up books in the game.

Well it is non-intuitive by definition when you have to RTFM to grasp it. :shrug:

Still, I'm not going to change my settings I have used since Ultima Underworld, so I remapped that WASD sillines to the Numpad.

Trying to customise the UI is a pain without external tools.

I suppose, not supporting Mouse Button 4 and 5 is okay for games that were made for Windows 98/ME (Well... Um... What? Skyrim isn't?) But not supporting the middle mouse button? WTF?

Also inconsistencies:
-You can remap the left hand attack to another key, but in the inventory you can't assign a weapon to your left hand if you do so.
-Even if you use Autohotkey to map the right button to "E" you will still draw your weapons when you right click on something.
