Interrupted Movement, Sticky Keys?

Post » Mon May 28, 2012 2:24 pm

Hello, just curious as to whether or not anyone else on here has happened to come across the same problem recently.

It only started to occur within the past 1 1/2 to 2 weeks, soon after the last small patch I believe (either for steam or for Skyrim itself I can't recall). One day the game was running fine and the next it's messed up. What happens is that if I am pushing the "w" key to move forward, every few seconds my character is suddenly and without warning halted. I can still move sideways, backup, look around, draw/sheathe my weapons and cast spells, but if I want to move forward again I must depress and then repress the "w" key. At first I thought it was my keyboard, since it was old and that particular key was starting to get stuck, but after plugging in a new keyboard the problem persisted. I tried loading older saved games to see if it was the result of crossing into some zone that caused a bug (and my main save file is 10mb, may be a problem there?) but nope, same problem; even after starting an entirely new game the bug was present right from the start. I then thought that perhaps this was the result of installing several mods a few days before (better water, textures, foliage, night sky, craftables) but after uninstalling them, again the problem appeared. Yesterday gave up and completely uninstalled both Skyrim and Steam, and removed all saved games and other extraneous files related to both programs. I then completely reinstalled both Steam and Skyrim, was forced to update them before being permitted to launch the game, and what a surprise......the halting/stuttering movement bug reared it's ugly head once again. To be clear, by stuttering I do not mean a fps/lag issue, the game runs perfectly smooth, but it's as if my character's feet are rooted to the ground and I am prevented from moving forward until I depress and then repress the "w" key.

If anyone else has encountered this issue please let me know. I have attempted to contact Bethesda about this and other problems in the past but as usual I either receive no response at all, or am sent a typical automated message worth absolutely nothing.

Thanks

Happens on my wife's computer, but not mine.

Are you using a wireless keyboard?

First thing to do is to swap keyboards to see if the problem repeats. Best to try a wired keyboard. I keep a cheap one for just this kind of thing.

Also, try changing the batteries in the keyboard, if is wireless.

The first keyboard was not wireless no, but the second one that I am using now is, although the batteries are relatively new and I haven't had any other problems using this keyboard for other software. It`s really strange, I mean considering I completely uninstalled both Skyrim and Steam and the movement glitch is still occuring after reinstallation and starting an entirely new game.

Thanks for the suggestions though, I`ll keep searching for related bugs and see if I can`t get some other ideas for solving it.

I've been having a slightly different issue...my sprint hotkey (ctrl) only gives a 1 second burst of speed then cuts out. This makes it somewhat difficult to outrun Dwarven Centurions.

Check your windows keyboard settings, specifically repeat delay and repeat rate settings. Also some wireless keyboards just wont work to well for gaming due to the way they detect and send signals back and forth. Its this, and the input delay that many wireless keyboards & mice have that always makes me advise anyone who games on PC to use wired devices only

Thanks for the advice all, as you guys suspected the problem lay in the wireless keyboard. For some reason the relatively new wireless keyboard (with new batteries) is messed up, so I went out to pick up a new wired keyboard. It turns out that most retailers now have completely removed all corded keyboards from their shelves since most manufacturers have stopped making them. I checked three common big-box stores and only one of them still offered a wired keyboard, and ONLY 1 type at that, so I have now had to resort to using a Mac keyboard on a PC :P All this aside though, this corded Mac board seems to have done the trick, I haven't had a single recurrence of the movement glitch since plugging it in this morning. Thanks all.

If you're a gamer, don't go to the box stores.

I buy almost exclusively from Newegg.com; but there's lots others... TigerDirect, even Amazon. Brick and Mortar stores are usually for office equipment.
