Intro & Ending subtitled?

Post » Fri Dec 24, 2010 12:59 pm

Now, I know from watching the previews and the like that Fallout New Vegas keeps the subtitle system or whatever it's called that Fallout 3 had. However, what about the intro & ending? The first may not be all that important, but what about the ending? Being deaf, it's a real bummer when you don't get to know what the effects of your actions were in an RPG because there's no subtitles and since FO3's intro & ending wasn't subtitled, what about the intro & ending in New Vegas...?

I also hope for cut-scene sub-titles.
I like to play games on low volume to hear my thoughts, and/or criticism on the games.
Please, help us audio-challenged friends out, Obsidian.
Seriously, I do think that they will add them in-game, as for now, I doubt you'll find a sub-titled version of the opening scene.

I'm no expert on this, but don't some games have a subtitle on/off mode when you go deep enough into the settings?

Cutscenes are made ahead of time, where as the Subtitle systems is generated off of in game content as it happens. So, they are two different things.

Now, Cutscenes should be Close Captioned (which is really a more appropriate implementation for those) for those who want or need it that way. However, I have not seen a game where cutscenes are subtitled. Granted, I skip almost every cut scene I can, so there may be some out there that can display subtitles.

Not sure if they are going to be subtitled, but I think you could find a transcript of the text at some point. Not the same thing mind you. Also, the end cutscene was pretty well fleshed out in the Official Game Guide, so you could see or read what took place.

Edit The ending Cutscene is subtitled as stated by Sawyer. That just leave the other Cutscenes, if there are any.

Yeah, I have a poor hearing myself and was annoyed at the lack of subtitles in the cutscenes in Fallout 3. And the cutscenes in Morrowind and Oblivion for that matter :P

The ending is subtitled.

That's great to hear :)

Well, a lot of games these days do, althrough to which extent differ. Fallout 3 for example, offers subtitles for not only dialouge but also casual pvssyr, but not cut-scenes (intro & ending).

However, I have not seen a game where cutscenes are subtitled. Granted, I skip almost every cut scene I can, so there may be some out there that can display subtitles.

Well, on top my head: Fallout 1 offered subtitles for the ending cutscene  . The Baldur's Gate series did as well...

Yes, I probably could. The Fallout wiki keeps transcripts of most stuff like that (like for example the transcripts of audio messages and the like (which, as it happens, weren't subtitled either). So, yes, I suppose I could simply look up the wiki for that (eventually), but as you say, it isn't the same thing... :(

The ending is subtitled.

Awesome to hear! I can put my worries at rest then! *sheds a tear of joy*

I'm pretty sore the holodiscs showed subtitles when you listened to them, when you had either dialog or general subtitles on.

I have both on. No subtitles ever appear for holodisks/audio logs :(

This is good news... I use subtitles on nearly everything I watch or play, it's always a disappointment (and a little surprising in politically correct 2010) when something doesn't have subs.

Really? I was sure there was one that had them in the dunwich building. I thought when I didn't see them, it was because multiple things that would have subtitles were going on. If not it must have been something else that was being subtitled. Its been forever since I've been in there.

Since you didn't mention, should we assume the opening cutscenes do NOT have subtitles though?

I used to depend heavily on subtitles, but thanks to playing PS3 games on my standard-def TV, my eyes exploded from squinting too hard and now I just turn up the volume really loud instead. True story.

How can you play games like this if you're deaf? I don't mean to be offensive and I'm very sorry if I am but I cannot stand to play with sound off. I like to hear the sounds of enemies sprinting my way and many many times, without that audible warning they would simply be on top of me and killing me before I knew they were there. How do you do it? I'm being totally serious.

They probably rely on the little red marks on the compass. A lot.

Guess they'd have to. But red marks don't show who or what is sneaking up behind you.

btw, what is your avatar from? Looks like a prawn from District 9 but I'm not quite sure.

Yes, all holotapes were subtitled in FO3. You just activate the tape, then quickly leave your pip-boy menu to see them. Little known fact. :)

... Bit of a stupid question if you ask me :P . For my part, I don't find playing games like these any less fun jsut because I can't hear. As fasr as enemies go, well... It simply means that I've got to try and be a bit more perceptive - for example, when roaming the Metro in Fallout 3, I looked extra closely to try and spot any feral ghouls before they spotted me. And, of course, keeping an eye on the red spots, though relying soley on them may be a bad idea. Sure, it's a bit of a nasty surpise to be attacked by a deathclaw (or more commonly a bloatfly) from behind because I can't hear it, but no way I'm going to let that stop me from playing an interesting and fun game - I doubt it'd stop you either, if you were unfortunate enough to have deafness strike you at some point in your life

Interesting. So it's only a matter of the pip-boy beign "in the way"? Gotta try this and see if it works later then :D

I'm sorry you thought my question was stupid. I guess its because I rely heavily on those audible warnings that gave me such a reaction. I honestly wasn't asking how can you play as if you are required to hear but I was asking how do you play while being deaf. I was more curious to your strategy than anything.
