Issue w Keyboard

Post » Thu May 24, 2012 9:03 pm

Hello,

I'm unable to use the apostrophe key when I either name new characters or rename enchanted items. Every other key works, colon, semi-colon, brackets, etc. Just not the apostrophe / quote key. Both computers I have at home have this problem.

Is anyone else experiencing this or have any suggestions on how I may solve this?

Tried to do a search, and only one other thread popped up: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1277163-weird-naming-issue-can-use-an-apostrophe-on-one-computer-not-on-another/page__p__19312607__hl__apostrophe__fromsearch__1#entry19312607

Checked my settings, computer is using English (US).

Thanks in advance.

Edit - In addition to the apostrophe / quote key not working, only the end bracket key works. Even if the beginning bracket key is used, the end bracket shows up. Also tested this with multiple keyboards / two other computers at home.

If it helps, this feels very similar to the Morrowind / Oblivion infrared glitch where people could not access the console with the tilde key.

Re-mapped my middle mouse button to use the apostrophe keystroke.

Tried it in-game, wasn't recognized in the naming fields.

Re-mapped asterisk to the middle mouse button.

Game recognized it without a problem.

Something about Skyrim 1.2 (I don't know if this was an issue pre-patch) doesn't recognize the apostrophe keystroke for some people.

Found something different, hoping this will help solve whatever this is.

(A lot more pressing problems out there, hoping those get fixed first.)

Tried to bind ' (apostrophe keystroke) to one of the keys in-game.

Chose Forward (default W).

Instead of showing the proper keystroke like it usually does if you bind it to another key (e.g. P if I binded it to P, or * if I binded it to *. In this case ' ) it shows 0x92.

0x92

0x91 if I try to bind the beginning bracket. [

No idea what that means, but hope that's helpful. It leads me to believe that there's more people out there that are experiencing this, since it seems to be client based.

Thank you.

(On a side note, it did let me use ' to move forward.)

0x92 is an ASCII value for a kind of apostrophe. Just a guess, but maybe there's a problem with the kind of font that the game uses.

Try uninstalling and reinstalling the game completely. If this does not work, if you happen to have a computer which this does not happen to, try copying the entire installation off that computer onto one that it did happen to. Otherwise, maybe there's some way to find where the game stores the font that it uses and obtaining a working copy of that.

Thanks for the response.

I'll try verifying via Steam to see if anything's different, then I'll try re-installing.

Verified files through Steam, nothing changed.

Uninstalled the game, removed all sub-folders, then re-installed.

Still nothing.

I have to ask - Is anyone else experiencing this problem? Not being able to use ' or [ when naming.

Thank you.
