Issue with EVGA Prescision and MSI Afterburner (OC Utilities

Post » Mon Aug 09, 2010 7:26 am

I've narrowed my problem down to an overclocking utility causing the bug. I don't know whose side it's on, but let me give you a little info.

I was playing Crysis 2 and as I was playing (with a high overclock) the graphics card driver crashed (never happened before with this OC that had been stable for months). I went to open the game again, except I alt tabbed out for a second after it was at the Menu screen. After attempting to alt tab back in it was just a black screen with the Crysis mouse. This error seems to only occur when I have an overclocking utility opened. I tested it with EVGA Presicion and MSI Afterburner. If I close them everything is gravy, but I do like to monitor my Temps, memory, fps, fan speed, etc. This only occurred AFTER the driver crash.

I've tried uninstalling my Nvidia drivers, O.C. utilities and Crysis 2, none have worked.

System Specs:
W7Ultimate
2x GTX 580's SLI
Core i7-930
6 GB DDR3 1600Mhz ram.

If you need any more information, please let me know and I will attempt to provide you with whatever I can.

Thank you

It is probably because of 2x GTX 580's :\ Sli does not work very well on Crysis 2 at the moment, it has been noted A LOT. Just play with one gpu, I'm using a GTX 560 Ti, and I am still able to play max settings on 60 fps.

Thanks for the input. After reinstalling the graphics card drivers I tried it with SLI Disabled and the problem still occurred. I forgot to include that.

I can't really say what's the cause, but I'm running 3-way SLI and so long I'm using single-screen I have no issues. Only with 3screens I have some input-lag/delay. Other than that no SLI issues as others report (like flickering etc). I also have Fraps running and EVGA Precision 2.02 I think. The Overlay on precision is mostly disabled, but active on the background (key toggle to activate I mean).

Not trying to cause more confusion, as I know how frustrating high-end system can get at times, but just try to take your OC down a nudge to see if that helps.

I've taken the overclock off completely. The overclock at first was merely for benchmarking purposes. I just don't understand what the problem could be. I've uninstalled drivers and everything. I've done everything short of a complete format.

That's really odd indeed. Never had problems with EVGA Precision. What version Precision and drivers are you using?

I am using the most up to date version of EVGA Precision and drivers. I was on the 266 Nvidia driver version, then updated it to the 267. Same results both times, except using 267 enabled SLI for Crysis.

Have you tried disabling certain items to display on the overlay, such as GPU usage? Perhaps it's one of the specific hardware monitoring features that are causing problems. Only odd thing i found about mine right now is; it doesn't display FPS on the overlay. Maybe because I have fraps on the other corner on the screen, no clue, but your problem is very odd indeed.

I have no overlay applications enabled from EVGA. The monitoring I use is in my Logitech G510, which is not a screen overlay AFAIK. I have Xfire and Steam overlays, but they haven't affected it in any way so far. I will try disabling all of them for testing purposes and give you a response.

Thanks.

Thanks, nGAGE. I've seemed to found the cause of the problem. It was not the utility, it was 3 overlays at once. (I didn't think that EVGA Prescision G15 LCD screen counted as an overlay)

So for all of you people who use overlays, limit it to two! Thanks again! Now I can monitor my temps and fps while playing again!

Glad it helped. I had no clue you had a logitech keyboard. If I had known that, I could have mentioned that as well. Had a G15 and G19 in the past and both, regularly, caused problems when using the LCD for such tools. I miss the G19 a bit, but got the G110 (without LCD) and have no more keyboard related problems as far as I can tell.

PS: I think Logitech svcks with drivers. Their drivers have caused so many unnoticed problems in the past, dunno why it's not a well known fact. Example: FEAR1 running 120+fps ... with Logitech keyboard 15fps
I also always have to disable the keyboard G-key tool to enable/disable SLI. Stupid.

I didn't know that!

I'm actually messing with a cl_fov change keystroke macro for fun.

Basically I set my Field of View to 10 (pretty much like using 20x zoom) for enemies really far away.

After that I set it back to cl_fov 55 (default)

It's really fun.
