I am an avid Skyrim junkie who purchased an Xbox 360 just to have Hearthfire and Dawnguard DLC. I own Lakeview manor, have 2 adopted children, have the Bard Llewellyn the Nighingale and made Faendal my Steward as I have yet to attain Thaneship in Falkreath- almost there though. I am getting ready to marry Vilkas. For some time, I had no issues with dragon, bandit or giant attacks, and was fighting with no issues with the help of my Steward. Now suddenly, every attack kills both my steward and my bard. Also, my chickens and cow were killed, and Faendal stopped offering me the ability to replace them. I left Faendal with max improved dragon light armor and he does not change into this when the manor is attacked.

Any ideas? Solutions? What is the point of having a Steward and Bard if they get killed every time I fast travel to my Manor????

Things might turn around once you get your Thaneship (new housecarl) and get married, assuming you leave Vilkas at home. Also, what level is your character? I'm given to understand that Faendal's max level is 30, so if you're well beyond that, that might explain why he's having such a hard time surviving.

Good to know, though - I was debating between Faendal and Vilkas for steward. I guess I have my answer...

Unfortunately, followers will stay in their default outfit when they're not following you. The only way to upgrade their gear in that instance is to give them upgraded weapons and health potions. The housecarl, Rayya, for Lakeview Manor is great, i gave mine 2 lengendary daedric swords and she hasn't died yet.
