Items flying around.

Whenever I enter a place, sometimes items randomly fly around everywhere and makes noise, it's extremely annoying. Anyone know how to fix this?

This was a problem in Oblivion as well. It's caused by the physics engine. I don't know the specifics, but basically when you enter a room for the first time, even though everything was neatly placed in the static editor, when the physics actually kick in for the live game, some things just suddenly react. Could be they were placed too close to each other, or interacted badly with some other objects (maybe set too low in the table or too far above it). Could be buggy physics too in some cases. Basically what you are witnessing is the very first use of the physics engine in that cell. If you exit and then enter a second time (without reloading the game), it probably won't happen again, as the interactions have mostly all been resolved.

I know what you mean but it's different. [censored] flies around like projectiles, once a spoon or some [censored] hit me hard and took down half my health. It's pretty bad, and it's not just the first time I enter =/

bump - this is also happening to me.

A flying kettle nearly killed me?

Even when I cant see stuff flying, in buildings I can constantly hear things bouncing off walls - its immersion destroying......

Yeah, even the reviews mention this one.

It's only happened to me once, luckily.

To fix, (I think) make sure you are not forcing VSYNC OFF via your display driver control panel.

This is why the game launcher does not give you a "disable vsync" option - it's enabled by default

This is a known gamebryo issue.

Maybe even force vsync on if you have to (haven't tested)

A known issue, but they went ahead with it anyway despite using it in a world where there would be TONS of loose objects just waiting to kill people...

I haven't been hit by anything yet, but I haven't explored a lot yet either. Keep ending up here more than I'm playing. Kinda sad really.

Yes, I believe it's related to turning vsync off. The physics are based off the graphics framerate (which is a bad thing to do for exactly this reason), so if you have vsync off and your frame rate gets too high, the physics will go crazy.

I wish this were true, but this happens every time I enter an Inn, or my house, or pretty much any interior space, even if I've visited it before.

Yeah that's what someone else was saying too. I assumed it was the same problem as the past titles, but apparently this is new to Skyrim and has something to do with Gamebryo. I haven't been in the same place twice, well.. not that it would matter because there's nothing left in a place after I've visited it the first time. :P

I think the suggestion is to force vsync on.

Will try tonight (in 8ish hours!) and respond if that solves it.

Experiencing this bug with vsync on as well.
Seems worse than in OB (or I'm just unlucky). On the bright side...my character is getting exercise chasing around the objects that shoot 25' away when he drops them to the ground.

Details of my experience with this bug:

  • VSync has made no difference and was forced off even before I played Skyrim.
  • Doors seem to be the primary cause of this issue. Both the player and NPC's using doors will cause objects to fly around. It doesn't matter if the door leads to a loading screen or not.
  • Various objects will slam about continuously, causing a rapid fire cacophony. Strangely, if you look in different directions, the noise will cease temporarily.

This is a really strange issue and it's totally immersion breaking. Almost every interior in my game has been permanently trashed by objects thrown everywhere. I have died entering and exiting buildings. Important conversations have been overwhelmed by the sound of a random object slamming into something several times a second.

LOL Sorry alceryes, OT but I about gave myself a migraine squinting to read all of your avatar (yeah I need new contacts). I like it. :P

So it's tied to doors at least, both entering and exiting. Have you encountered this using any other activators (like, say, levers) or when opening containers?

I have absolutely no clue regarding the technical details, but it's almost like the static objects - the ground, tables, stuff like that - are REPELLING non-static objects, those that are loose, movable or that can otherwise be affected by the physics engine. Does identifying this help? I don't know. I'll leave that up to somebody more technically minded.

So far doors are the only activator that I've witnessed causing a problem. I have noticed a general issue of unstable non-static objects within the game, e.g. a sweet roll shaking in a bowl, plates shaking on tables, and objects that seem to be stuck but bouncing rapidly.

In my experience this follows the issue with the door, or is an indicator that a nearby door will cause all the objects to fly about. It doesn't effect all the non-static objects either.

My bad, I misread it as forcing off vsync. I will also try forcing it on to see if the issue persists.

I received the same issue today while playing and I just recently disabled vsync. I'll enable it again and see it solves the problem for me.

EDIT: Solved it.

EDIT 2: Unfortunately doors still seem to trigger it but rest is fine. Havok being havok I guess.

vsync prevents screen tearing by synchronizing your machines FPS output with the refresh rate of your display. to do this, it won't allow framerates above your display's hz (60hz = 60 fps, 120hz = 120 fps), and when your framerates are below those levels vsync will keep them at some appropriate fraction of them to prevent tearing.

the physics go crazy at high framerates. 120 causes the issue, 60 doesn't. say your computer can put out 100 fps in a room. if your monitor is only 60hz, vsync will lock you down from 100 to 60 fps, solving the problem. if you're using vsync and have a 120hz monitor, vsync won't lock you to 60 because it can display up to 120 fps...it will simply keep you at some optimal fraction of 120. so if your computer can put out 100 fps, it will be able to keep you around there while still synchronizing with the refresh rate of your monitor. it therefore won't fix the physics bugs because 100ish fps causes them still.

my problem: i can set my 120hz display to 60hz. so with vsync on i am locked to 60 fps, thus fixing the crazy physics. this introduces unplayable mouse lag that isn't there when i play with vsync on at 120hz. i think vsync causes that lag when it is trying to limit an immense amount of frames into much lesser refresh rate.

So it's a case of vsync on with totally f**ked up mouse movement, which ruins the game.

Or vsync off with poltergeists in every indoor area throwing everything around and totally destroying all immersion, which ruins the game...

Way to go Bethesda. Who do we contact about this? I've clicked support in the launch menu and the website it takes you to is some tacky mess that I very much doubt they are looking at.

Aren't these the people that were also partially responsible for what Carmack christened as the "clusterf**k" ie Rage?
