Items locking in place, world spaces, and height maps

Title pretty much says it all. I'll be playing with an object and it will suddenly stop moving and I am unable to edit or delete it. The undo button wont work

1) this is really annoying and has ruined a lot of my mods forcing me to start over in a lot of cases. Is there a key that I'm hitting that's doing this? It's quite a pain, but I can see how this would be incredibly useful. I've searched around for this a lot, but I just can't seem to find anything on it, just unrelated bug reports

2)when items are locked in place there is a bounding box around it. if this is a feature in the CK I'd like to remove the bounding box.

3) is there a way to bound items and walls together to turn them into one object? It's a really common feature in photo editing software, can't imagine why it wouldn't be in the CK.

4) can anyone recommend a free program for making height maps? I've looked into it and people say that feature is just broken in the creation kit. If so, can someone help me find the relative cell size compared to the high maps? A few I've played with are set at 1024X1024 at default, I just don't know if that would be one cell or a thousand. For example, one wilderness block equates to what in height map editing? I've tried going back to the oblivion construction set to make them, but every time I try to import it the CK crashes. Advanced erosion features would be nice.

I'm a fairly experienced modder with plenty of experience modding morrowind and oblivion. I had a 3-4 year hiatus from modding and it has had a serious impact on my modding ability.

Thanks in advanced, I have quite a few questions lol.

I don't have an answer to the first three questions, but I should be able to help with the fourth.

The http://hoddminir.blogspot.com has a tutorial on how to create a heightmap and then create a worldspace from it. In addition to GeoControl, you could have a look at World Machine.

Each exterior cell is represented by an area consisting of 1024 pixels (32^2), so a 1024px *1024px heightmap would give you a 32 cell *32 cell worldspace.
