Jack of All Trades, Master of None (Game Features)

Post » Thu May 10, 2012 9:28 pm

Skyrim seems to let you do many things. But very few are done well. It seems all the "care" went into the action aspects of the game. The Role-playing aspects are poorly implemented.

Edit:
You probably don't know what I'm talking about.

Done well.

1. Action
2. Exploration
3. Quests
4. Variety and Uniqueness
5. Skill-based crafting
6. Voice Acting

Done Poorly

1. Non-Skill-based Crafting (Cooking, Mining, Choping Wood, etc.)
2. Taverns (Could have been done better)
3. Children (They all look the same)
4. Marriage (Extremely lacking in the romance department)
5. Companions (Not very deep)
6. Passive dialogue (repeating the same line every 5 seconds)
7. Bards (Don't they know more songs?)
8. Wildlife (They sure do like drowning themselves)
9. Beast Race voices (Why do the women sound like they smoked cigarettes all their life, but the men sound normal?)

Disagree.

I'd go into more detail, but since you were incredibly vague, I thought I'd keep the tradition going.

I disagree. I think quite a few things are done very well. I think all the "care" went into action and RPG aspects equally.

I edited my original post. I love the game, and I think it's the best game ever made.

I'm w/ ya Skyrimmer.

It's a fantastic game, coulda used a bit more personality and emotion in the companions though. New Vegas blows Skyrim out of the water in that department.

Well, obviously some parts are less well done than others. Why would we need other games if those things were done well?

The best games are created with a very clear view on what you can and especially can't do in a game. If a game tries to do everything, it will excel at nothing. Skyrim manages to excel at important stuff (exploration, quests, action to a lesser degree), and be decent at the points you mentioned.

Role playing game... the most important elements are role playing elements, not action elements.

i disagree, the RPG aspects seems to strike me as traditional what do you expect? it to be a unique build, the RPG build is extensive to the point where making a unique one could prove an impossible task the only issues im having are technical such as lag and lacking HUD for somethings

the children i can live with i don't really pay attention to them anyway aside from maybe Babette from the Dark Brotherhood.

i don't know what you mean about taverns could have been done better they are what taverns should be a place of food drink and sleep.

the companions don't bother me either i just gave a lot of em to the blades.

the thing of bards just makes me think your just being nit picky.

beast voices are pretty general males voices are deep as it is what would they improve on aside from making it more scratchy and the women who don't have deep voices it makes sense that they sound like that.

i haven't noticed the passive dialogue thing

and i don't know what else you would expect of the non-skill based jobs like how else would they be done exactly

I think they've done an excellent job overall. True there are some features that seem minor to be a bit thin in comparison to everything else. The graphics are epic, the combat has been overhauled and is awesome. Stealth, Magic and Warrior and the various combinations are all equally playable. Voices are a cut above, the story and environment are very well done. Plenty of nice little touches. For me the most disappointing aspects for me have been cooking and marriage and the companion system, the fact that they're even in the game is good enough for me. Also they've provided a platform for modders as well. They cant do EVERYTHING perfectly, given the time, they did most of it very well and some of it adequately. I mean what other RPGs are there with this much scope and depth?

That being said though, RPing your character is a bit more difficult in Skyrim. But I'm sure once my head stops reeling from how awesome everything looks I can get more properly immersed.

I hope the Creation Kit is released soon. Mods will fill in the Role-playing void.

these things i agree with in one way or another... though idk about the marriage thing because im not getting married because im married in real life.
