Jumping Puzzles - What do you think

Post » Sun Feb 17, 2013 2:24 am

I was just thinking about how i loved the datacron hunting in SWTOR ( not the balloon) and
jumping puzzles in GW2. Then i started thinking about how that could be implemented in this
MMO as a form of exploration and maybe as a further advancement/combination to the typical
puzzles we know from the scrolls. I would love to see it, but, i'm not sure if it would really fit in the game.

I, for one, hate puzzles. However, i'm also in favor of the idea of exploration, especially in the vertical sense. Games need to have places you can jump/climb up to for me to really feel like the world is 3d.

One of the worst feeling is to start jumping on a cliffside, only to be stopped by something invisible,
especially when you know that there is a way around.

There are two things which set me off most implementations of jumping puzzles that I've encountered:
  • Poor jump controls. If you are going to make me perform precision jumps, give me a good control system for jumping.
  • Missing a jump sends me back to the beginning. If need to make a dozen jumps to reach the objective, don't make me loose all of my progress if I miss one near the end. I don't mind having to retrace a couple steps, but I don't want to retrace the entire route for one misstep.

I have a feeling you would have hated this then: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXRTfI06pXY

I didnt mind the jumping puzzles in SWTOR and GW2. Added a little bit of fun to exploring the world. Unfortunately I had some trouble in GW2 as I was playing a Norn with the biggest body type, which made seeing where I was going a little awkward at times.

Poor Norn, you guys where so bullied when it came to jumping, especially
at the Mad King clock tower. But, you got a tad smaller when you took
of the armour :D
