Skyrim sounds amazing. I've heard sounds that I've never even heard before! The sound quality is amazing. If you have the money I recommend getting a decent headset to play skyrim with.

I play on my laptop, using the same headphones that came with my iPod. They're not as flashy as an expensive set of headphones, but they get the job done, and Skyrim does sound much better with headphones. It's much easier to hear npc dialogue (ex. bandits), as well as weather effects, rivers, waterfalls, and the in-game music. So much is lost when listening to the game through regular speakers, especially if playing on the tv with the speakers located across the room.

Not just Skyrim - a decent headset or set of speakers will vastly improve your experience with pretty much every game out there.

Yes, a proper headset really adds to the quality of the gaming experience in my opinion. In the past I always used 2.1 stereo speakers/subwoofer until I purchased my new system. Originally I thought a headset to be heavy on the head and annoying, but I couldn't be happier with the purchase of a wireless headset. Now I don't know much about Triton products, but I'm very happy with my Logitech G930. :)

Headsets be dammed... I've got to give props to using the tape monitor input of a big 1980's JVC amp/tuner (with the 'Loudness' button of course) in combination with a set of 14" speakers from the 1970's... Pioneer I think (label's fallen off). There's no reason your neighbors shouldn't enjoy the immersion too.

I would not categorize triton's as nice.

You could buy some good headphones and an amp and get MUCH better sound. I have tritons and sharkoons and now I leave them for the kids to use.

Get some good Sony, Sennheiser or AKGs with a decent amp and you will really hear the difference.

+edit+

sorry, that sounded snobbier than was intended. I remember loving my whenever I upgraded too, but when you go with some real headphones the difference is astounding.

It really makes all the 'gaming' headsets sound like cheap junk.

Isn't it great? So much more immersion with surround sound or high fidelity speakers. It makes the music really shine :D

If you use headphones I recommend the Turtle Beach DSS. It gives you digital sound, a volume knob, handy if your headphones don't have one, and simulated Dolby surround sound.

I've got a Logitech G35 headset. It's good, but I'll take my 5.1 surround sound speakers over them any day.

This. Although I usually plump for headphones as the wife is usually watching telly, or people are trying to sleep when I'm on. I use my turtle beaches usually, although if I have no need to chat I break out my AKG headphones.

Being able to hear where a sound is coming from is immensely useful, be it soundwhoring in CoD, or hearing that draugr gurgle behind you just in time to whip round and give it a face full of sword...

It all depends on what headphones you use. My TBs give me a sense of what direction sounds are coming from, so I often get the drop on where an enemy is if it is moving or breathing etc. As well as the direction they seem more noticeable when using headphones.

My AKGs, which are very high quality do the same, and also pick out what sounds were given what level of quality. Music is excellent quality, but space was saved on NPC speech. I can deal with that in light of how rich the orchestra sounds though :)

Sounds very nice through my Bose, 5.1 using 10 speakers and a 400W sub, when a Sabre cat ambushes you it scares the bejeezus out of you. ;)

It's much easier hearing the wind, rain, distant npc dialogue, game music and etc., without having to crank up the volume. I tend to notice these things more through headphones as opposed to speakers.

I originally bought Turtle Beach DPX21. I was so amazed at the sound it was jaw dropping. It really did improve my game (epecially when playing Bad Company 2). I could hear enemies from behind and turn around and kill them in the split second. It was crazy luck but also thanks to the good hearing.

Sadly after 7 months the ear piece on the headset broke off and wasn't the same. I then brought Tritton AX 720 which are very comfortable but they're slightly too large though as I have a small head.

I don't know which had better sound but I'm thinking of upgrading but I do not know what to get. I'll be busy for six weeks and then after that I might be busy again so I don't know if I'll get the time to play like I used to.

I totally agree. I'm playing using Turtle Beach X12's at the moment.

Wow. That's a nice setup. I'm jealous. Nothing beats Bose.

I have audio technica ATH-M50's and they sound great (though a little bass heavy but not too much). I've gone to Best Buy and looked at all the gaming headsets marketed and was amazed at how cheaply they were made (most were turtle beach's). If you can't live without a mic with your cans, get Logitech's. If you don't really care but just want the best possible sound quality, pick up these AT M50s or Sennheiser HD 598's (alot of Sennheiser models are very good, not just 598).

For in-ear headphones I have Etymotic Research HF5's. They are very well balanced and sound VERY good, but I just can't stand having the things deep in my ear. Sometimes I'll accidentally pull on the cord with my arm and when that thing rips out of your ear, it is not pleasant lol.

uDac2 -> little dot I+ amp -> AKG K601 here. The best setup I could afford on a student's budget and it's served me well so far. The soundstage is pretty awesome, definitely helps with the compass turned off and a sabre cat is sneaking up from behind.
