Just got my Blind Swordsman role play started up.

Post » Wed Jul 25, 2012 3:42 am

Got the idea for this from the episode of The Boondocks called Grandpa's Fight. The description of the blind samurai Huey gave made me think, "This is perfect for a Skyrim build!"

My Blind Swordsman is a Dunmer named Heslef Redoran. He's about 99 years old, and comes from the mainland of Morrowind. He served Great House Redoran for a time, but was kicked out when he was blinded during a duel with someone. He spent a few years wallowing in his self pity until he noticed he could hear the sounds of everything as if he was seeing by hearing. He began to notice he could smell better than he could when he wasn't blind.

He began to take on the life of a mercenary of sorts. He would do some work for the Legion when they needed help. He would often help get rid of any blighted creatures and dangerous people in most cases. He began to become skilled in relying on his sharpened senses of hearing and smelling to the point where blocking with a weapon was almost like second nature for him.

He decided to go and retire to Skyrim by the time he was 90 because he grew weary and unable to handle the work he was doing. He lives in Whiterun and has grown tired of his retirement. He's going back to being a mercenary until he dies.

Heslef's main skills will obviously be one handed and block with some sneak and alchemy thrown in. He's going to be using swords rather than daggers and will be using a mixture of heavy and light armor, but mainly light armor. I'm going to try not to use any skill books due to his lack of eyesight. I'll make an exception for spellbooks because they just teach spells. Can't wait to get this role play fully started up, because it has to be the best idea I have gotten from any cartoon!

The only rule to this role play is to understand the character is blind, and that it isn't something that stops them. They just have a handicap that they use to their advantage. If anyone wants to join in on this idea, go on ahead. The blindness doesn't have to be full on blind, as plenty of people who are legally blind can still see a bit.

I think I'll try this mostly blind, now should I turn brightness up or down?

Your choice. I'm keeping the brightness at default because I'm going to play a skilled one. I hope no one finds this idea offensive. If you want to feel blind yourself, you could turn the brightness down. Really, just a matter of what you'd like to do with a simple idea.

I'd say down, unless you're playing as an albino (or at least someone sensitive to sunlight). Then you should turn it up. :P

Very interesting idea! I'd try a character like this, but I have to figure out how to simulate blindness. Having a darker setting (like mentioned) might do it.

Hehe. Better show the clip that inspired this idea. I have to link to an AMV version due to the original clip having an offensive word...

I'm going to play with a blindfold on, for the true RP experience. Wonder how long I'd last?

Great idea. My role play isn't going to be a samurai. It's just going to be a swordsman. I'm glad people want to try this out themselves. I love sharing these builds that are extremely open ended because it makes the game have more to it and gives people more to do. Good luck with your tries at this, guys!

Actuallly I could probably make it out of Helgen since the guys are constantly saying "C'mon, I think this is the way out." Doubt I'd ever make it to Riverwood though.

Its just a straight jump and I think even if you don't make it you can go around the house, right?

You should turn the brightness way down to really feel blind at times. I could never rp a blind guy with a default brightness setting on :/

What I do is just give my character the 'two blind eyes' option in the character creatin. My main Dragonborn is a young, blind Breton female warrior.

When she reads, I RP that they have the Tamriel equivalent of our Braille that we haven't heard of for very obvious reason (ie, it is not important to the plots). When she reads it, she's running her hands along the raised lettering and symbols while I am reading it in the print version. Or, if she has a companion, the companion is reading it out to her.

She also uses some of the magic granted to her by her Breton blood, so it helps her sense where she is, etc. She often uses the carriages to get across the holds.

But what if she has to go to a fort? She uses her customed-made map with rased dots and dashes indicating roads, mountains, and major locations. I pretend that she gives it to a person (like Rikke, for instance) who puts a sticker or some kind of round mark on the location for her to feel. The rest is done by her acute sense of navigation, her magic, and carriages.

When she escaped Helgen, I imagined that Ralof/Hadvar had their hand on her arm, pulling her through the chaos. On the road to Riverwood? They either had their hand on her arm, or she just followed them, listening to their voice (they talk most of the way there) and footsteps. It helps that her gift of magic enables her to sense things, so it helps as well.

One thing to keep in mind. Your blind Dunmner, and my blind Breton have the Dragon's blood (regardless if either of them do the MQ), so that should help them some, too.

You'll have to find spells that locate the dead and the living so that she can find her way inside a place, and even outside. Tolfdir sells them at the College of Winterhold.

Oh dear, I think I'm going to give it a try! lol

Ouch, this Skyrim is starting to get boring if people tries so hard to invent ways to entertain. You think it's going to be fun for an other long year? (without DLCs)

Anyway nice idea.

You think that we do that because this game is boring? It's all the contrary but if you don't want to understand, don't even try, you could get a headache.

Why would it get boring, futark? That's the point of the Elder Scrolls, to make up lifestyles for your characters.

If OP and I want to roleplay blind Dragonborns, then that is what we'll do.
