I've been hearing horror stories about the PC version. Should I hold off on getting it?

Not if your pc can run it. I got Oblivion for the pc and had to run it on minimum and I would never change that.

I've had no problems at all after downloading dawnguard...o.O

I think most of those 'horror stories' are due to mods people might be running. I know when I had around 50-60 mods on my old saves upgrading to patches and such would cause my game to instantly CTD or cause lots of lag on loading a save.

Now I only have around 16 mods and the game has run perfectly fine ever since.

there is alot of issues, with the DLC like the DLC will bug out older quest in vanilla Skyrim and you will see bug quest on the DLC too. ( and im only using 1 mod that is a house mod) so i dont think my mod will give me the problems

So far my only two 'bugs' are that my werewolf form won't properly revert back to what I used to be, I remain in werwewolf model, can't use tab other than going to werewolf perk tree.
But it's easily fixed with player.setrace command, so a minor nuisance really.

Another is that so far my achievements aren't unlocking, the least of my concern (but that's a subjective I suppose)

Other than that, I am getting the impression that language/region settings affect stability of Dawnguard. something I believe was also the case with the 360 release.

What I would say is, buy it now while it's on sale, and just don't activate/install the mod until fixes are released.

The trouble with the PC version is at first glance it's hard to tell what's a genuine bug and what's an unintentional bug caused by a mod. There are certainly some serious, genuine bugs with Dawnguard that have gone unpatched from the 360 to the PC version. See http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1396549-dawnguard-bug-list-2/; I know a number of bugs reported in there are part of what personally put me off paying the $20 entry fee, at least until USKP-Dawnguard arrives.

That said, I'm sure a number of the "horror stories" that have been going around are caused by unintentional mod conflicts. Especially ones related to CTDs and wonky script/vampire/mounted combat behavior.

Is that possibly due to PC already having the 1.7 patch?

Well lets see random lock ups.

When you go to sleep or rest it takes forever once you hit enter for time to actually pass.

Ive tried disabling all mods, and Im stuck at the Moth priest. I can feed on the svcker but when I try to talk to him hes still aggressive towards me.

Horror story here, no mods and automatic crash in vampire castle, cannot play at all cause it crashes on load every single time....scary isnt it....do not buy this till a week or 2 pass, or you will suffer.

I finished the main portion of the Dawnguard with the worst bug being one of your followers getting caught on a ledge of ice between the ground and water. Nothing a good Unrelenting Force could not fix. Of course I am using higher end specs if PC specs are the driving issue for the crashes.

I'm surprised, Dawnguard has never crashed on my Xbox. Here I was thinking bug testing it on Xbox would make it crash free for PC.

I'm on vanilla Skyrim and Dawnguard. Worst for me is the models for vampires and my character are bugging like crazy. Mounted combat has my character standing straight up on top of the horse never drawing a weapon. Can't get Touching the Sky to work at all.

One thing that needs to happen for the PC version is the actual release of the Dawnguard .psc files. The lack of .psc files for Dawnguard is causing problems with mod projects, with the development of some mods (such as Tales of Lycanthropy) being put on hold until the .psc files are released.

Also, the lack of .psc files also makes unofficial script fixes such as those for quests and spells impossible as far as I'm aware.

To be honest the main reason why Dawnguard has issues on PC is people don't have good computers. Hell, I'm running a pretty good rig but I only have 4mb of memory so I crash a lot as is, Skyrim needs a good 6-16mb of memory to function the way it was meant to.

I have 6 gb , I have the latest direct x 11 card , lot of HD space ... I can run skyrim at max and use no mods .... so there are really no other reason why the game coudl crash to descktop all of a sudden if not some internal bugs...

well my game is completely broke, done so many fixes people have suggested it is unreal just nothing works, constant error 51 since downloading dawnguard. all i did was play it for an hour, got to the point were a quest bugged and the quest giver wouldnt talk to me because i was human, despite actually being a vamp, so i exit the game and reloaded in an attempt to fix it... ERROR 51 ?_?

It's not just a horror story ... listen : my TESV gameplay after installing Dawnguard just lasts 40 seconds then CTD! That simply means I could not even start the quest. All mods disabled and uninstalled. Disabled and uninstalled Dawnguard as well. Nothing. It just does not work anymore. Luckily I backed up my Savegames before installing this s..t! :(

Hope a patch is going to be issued soonest!

yeh hope for a patch too , whatI did was , take the whole Data folder and delete , then reinstall all skyrim and dawnguard and the high textures pack.. that's all ... the game ctds after some times ... without any warning or apparent reason .... since I paid the money for the game I expect it to be playable but , having to wait ofr it to be playable is quite annoying , even because they could then say ....

Listen we have the game here , but as is still instable you most probably will be able to play from the 40 to 60 seconds befoure a ctd chance increase .... so is at your own risk and peril to decide ... if you want a more stable version perhaps wait the relase of the next patch and probably the game will even cost less ...

This is g-r-e-a-t. I remember I read that the Dawnguard version for PC was planned for September. So I had already made up my mind that OK, XBox users would have been privileged but that would have not been a problem. Nobody risks severe ictus problems without Dawnguard provided I am playing TESV since september and I have not explored the entire map yet (I do not even know how many hundred of hours gameplay I have at my back). Then I found out that it had already been released ... I can bet that there's some commercial executive over there that told the poor developers : "Hey guys let's shot out Dawnguard in July, everybody is going to buy it immediately [like me poor idiot] this would increase the cash flow of the company!" and the chief developer had placed as reply on the table they were not ready ... "Oh! No problem we will release a patch later!". I would like this person to be immediately fired! Like many of us Skyrim players I have bought Skyrim out of the steam platform ... this implies 4h of download and installation and half an hour more for Dawnguard. AND we must install all HiRes pack, mods and whatever again! Isn't that anyway more money and time to be spent for something I should already have? Bad, bad, bad idea my dear commercial executive. A bad bad stain on the company image even if it were the case that steam forced them to distribute it beforehand.

Thanks for your reply Prom. I think we have two possibilities here : first we can wait for the patch, which I think it will be released in September, that is during the month in which DG was supposed to be distributed or try to uninstall TESV and everything related to it, clear completely the registry entries and then install TESV again with just the HiRes DLC (hope that DG is not going to be installed automatically) and with great patience build up all our TESV again. In any case this situation svcks ...
