Just a note from an id fan and PC gamer.

With all B.S. aside, I will always have more patience towards id Software than any other developer. Glad to get that out! At least they gave us a [censored] PC game!!! I want to support id so bad! I can't believe that after so many disappointments from them I am still wiling to stand by them. They have been shady for far too long, blatantly telling lies, and handing out their cherished titles to developers that butchered them to almost unrecognizable shape....hence Wolfenstein!

What do you expect Bethesda? You merged with a company that has no idea where to belong anymore and are afraid of the PC community turning their backs on them for a change and getting what they have giving. Get what you give!!! But, their scheme continues to work with ages....been reading Edward Bernays huh id? You can see this gimmick is wearing thin on the PC community it only works on the console crowd. id.....you need to make your mind up about the PC community or your fate will be sealed with another longtime fan. We have been overlooking your faults for too long. I look at the Rage rack at the retailer and let me say these retailers lost tons of money on consumers being smart buyers and not impulsive puppets. I feel that everyone has lost out immensely on the fail of Rage, just my instinct driven mind telling me so. I am personally sorry for that but what do you expect! It has finally caught up with you!

With all of that said I think id is capable of regaining every ounce of integrity and respect from the complete understanding PC community with a fix to Rage. I think Rage is that good playability wise. Rage has all of the ingredients in my opinion. Rage may be a bit mediocre but it most certainly has the classic id feel; and for that I have to thank them.

I agree with your sentiments, but can't say I'm surprised that this is how RAGE turned out for the PC crowd. The id software that we knew and loved is gone and I don't see them coming back anytime soon. Despite Carmack expressing some regret over designing RAGE around consoles, I don't think the approach is going away anytime soon. It simply can't.

For better or worse, id Tech 5 is what will carry the company into the future, certainly with Doom 4 and possibly beyond. There is no way they're going back to the drawing board and changing or rebuilding it now... it's simply not feasible even if they wanted to. Despite isolated successes in the PC realm (namely, Steam), the industry is overwhelmingly convinced that the money to be made in gaming lays primarily in the console realm. This is what forged id's decision to base Tech 5 around console hardware in the first place and it's a decision that both id and it's (possibly former) fans will have to live with.

Out of all of id's games, the Doom franchise is most certainly my favorite. Knowing that Doom 4 will use the same underlying tech as RAGE though, I'd be lying if I said that my anticipation for that game hasn't decreased significantly. Hopefully time and further refinement of the engine will provide something that's a little more stable on PC and more exemplary of the platform in general. My expectations for the newest Doom game have definitely been lowered though.

At one time and for a long time, id were the innovators of gaming. With each new release, the industry was pushed forward in some tangible way. Even "misses" like Wolfenstein and Quake Wars could've been blamed on the contracted companies that developed them. RAGE being an "in-house" effort is a completely different story though. For me, it's release has turned id into just another developer... better than some, not as good as others. That's probably the worst thing I can say about a developer that was once so pivotal in the industry.

That is true! But I try to see the good with idTech 5; very smooth gameplay and it does mix well with id's crazy level design. I think the smoothest id game I've ever played. What I don't understand is why they are having so much trouble fixing it. I am not giving them a pass with Rage at all but I know previous id titles were always built on topline systems that caused many problems later. I see very much potential with how they are doing things now that everyone could be freaking happy, even the longtime id fans. They are so close to getting it right and Rage only needs touching up, even being an obvious cheap way out. If they could just touch Rage up I would be happy, it really doesn't need much at all...I don't understand why that is too much to ask and they wouldn't be digging the hole deeper. That is how I feel at the moment but if Rage stays like it is I will forget all about it like most people have.

+1 on OP's sentiments

Just irritates me that I have no custom mapping controls for keyboard/mouse - texture popping, OK I can deal with that until the fix. All the other issues I guess I can live with until it is fixed - but being forced to retrain my reactions to match the games mapping and not my own custom game play style really pisses me off. Hey I am an old dog that does not want to learn new tricks OK id? I play PC games only, I do not play consoles (my hands must have mouse/kb, damn controllers are too unstable). There are two reasons I play (and I suspect most play) PC games. 1 - Because PC's graphical and processing capabilities bury consoles in the dark ages which should = better visual and graphical eye candy playing experience especially with triple monitors and high end systems. 2 - Customizable and user configurable tweaks, mapping, and all the bells and whistles that normally comes with PC' versions as opposed to Console rigid or limited settings options. Now I am finding that most companies (id, Crytek, and so on) are using their long earned and hard fought reputation so that they can now cater to the consoles and port some limited crap to PC's, turning their backs on the PC crowd that MADE them who they are by buying their games - nice to know where the love and appreciation is as I try to get past these muted bit maps - oh wait there is the detail - oh no there it is gone again, was it just a dream..................

On a more positive note though I do have to say I like the storyline so far. I have not finished the campaign yet but working my way. As the game progresses I do find there are times I have to stop when the graphics want to play nice and give me that eye candy I so crave and it is undeniably id/Bethesda DNA in this game. I get the feeling of Doom, Metro2033, and Quake in this game many times over with a bit better visuals at times. However over all the game play, the environments, the feel, etc are pretty good. This game has its texture issues, I hate the console limitations, but the game itself - not bad.
