Just played Oblivion and realised how much better Skyrim is

Post » Sun Sep 23, 2012 4:36 am

I've played Oblivion through and through when it came out with multiple characters. First on the pc and then on the Xbox. Been a while since I've played it.

Since Skyrim was released its been skyrim, Skyrim, skyrim... And Oblivion has sat in the case.

I just put Oblivion back in to play as I wanted to walk the borders to see how they line up with Skyrim (Skyrim is much more realistic as it actually has road leading in and out which Oblivion unfortunately lacks) and I was surprised how much I prefer Skyrim in terms of controls and combat etc

Oblivion is still great and is very colourful in terms of graphical content etc but the whole feel of the character control is no where near as good as Skyrim IMO.

I didn't realise the extent until I just put it in to play. I also kept waiting for my character to slowly heal but realised I had to keep healing myself which was frustrating.

Oblivion is a great game without a doubt. However I guess I'm spoiled with our current graphics and controls. I tried to pick it up again on my 360 and gave up... I remember it being better. But that was like 5 years ago lol. Times change. Soon enough we'll think that of Skyrim and I can't wait.

I'd like to replay Oblivion because I really liked the guild quests, but I just don't think I could go back to the way orcs and bosmer were done.

I do agree. I love Oblivion for its colorful world. And yes character control is worse than Skyrim, especially its 3rd-person view. And walking animation just like a girl.

Actually, that's it a good things about Oblivion and Morrowind. I still prefer it as hardcoe player.

And honestly, the way Oblivion did with its Guilds and quests is much much much muuuuuuch better than Skyrim.
I love how guild works with its ranks in Oblivion and Morrowind.

Edit : I love what have Skyrim did with races face. In Oblivion, I have to spend three hours just to make good-looking face!! :swear:

I've been playing them both for a while and I've got a different overall impression. Skyrim looks better, animates better and has more atmosphere, whereas Oblivion seems more "meaty" to me, the quests are more involving, more intricate, the guilds seem more like real organizations where you work for admission in different parts of the province. Dark Brotherhood is so much better, outstanding quests and a lachance that has no match in Skyrim. The stats, armor degradation, armor slots, birth signs make Oblivion more "meaty" in terms of customization. The only atrocious thing that makes oblivion inferior to me (except the ugly faces haha) is the level scaling which I fixed by OOO. I prefer Skyrim for an open world adventure (beautiful world, dungeon design, unique places etc) but I prefer Oblivion for an RPG (character stats, factions, npc disposition, skills, spells).

What really set Skyrim ahead is the use of both hands and the special moves. I found myself keep wanting to perform a dual one handed attack on my enemy.

The character looks in Skyrim is amazing in conparison. I really love the way my Nord looks. Long blonde hair, blue eyes, slight facial hair, face paint down one side of face, very slight scaring to the cheek. He look great in armor (wear dragonbone) without the helmet (wear dragon priest mask if in challenging combat)

Not worried at all by the looks. One thing though, Skyrim gets some stick for the repeated NPC lines, but you can hear some nice conversations if you just stop and listen. Whereas listening to Oblivion NPCs makes it seems as though Cyrodiil is Tamriel's insane asylum.

oblivion was great when it came out but for me its hard to go back to it know. i agree npcs have some good conversations but they looks so carton like compere to skyrims, its not that game is bad its just evolution of next generation game i am sure next elder scroll on a new counsels will be much better than skyrim

I still find Oblivion better in some aspects. Skyrim is surely more polished and fixed a lot of Oblivion's flaws, but it also removed some of the features that I used to love and still appreciate in Oblivion, especially the questlines, the attributes based progression and the magic system.

It ultimately comes down to whether you prefer better graphics or better story. Lately I've bee playing Oblivion again and I really don't want to play Skyrim, because to say the writing is horrible would be an understatement of the decade. Seriously, Oblivion didn't have really good writing, but compared to Skyrim it's a bloody literature masterpiece.

Also, playing as a mage was more fun in Oblivion because of a huge variety of spells and spellmaking. Running around Cyrodiil was a blast with high speed attribute and acrobatics skill.

You're saying it's hard to play Oblivion. Arena was hard for me at first :P

Same here, the Acrobatics skill and the Speed attribute are my favorite tools for an acrobatic character and made me feel like something's missing in the beautiful land of Skyrim.
